bcw
I certainly wasn't thrilled to hear Whaley say that Byrd's safety spot would be filled by someone on roster. That means it will be a competition between Searcy, Duke Williams and Meeks. I guess Whaley feels he can get by with a lesser player at safety if he surrounds them with talent, much like Chris Williams at rg playing between Glenn and Wood. The safety position held up well last year when Byrd was out, where the cb spot struggled without Gilmore. So, I started to do a little research about Duke Williams and came away looking optimistic to see what he can do on the field. It isn't unheard of for a mid-round pick to start at safety. His scouting report said he was aggressive and loves to hit. However, it says he is small (5'11, 200) and doesn't have a nose for int's. I read in a few predraft articles that he was a very underrated prospect. After looking at pictures on his Twitter account he certainly looks to have a solid build https://twitter.com/Duke27_ . He also has a cool video of his off-season workout program which shows me that he is a hard worker https://twitter.com/Duke27_/status/444262087032713216 Time will tell if he can handle to jump to starting in the NFL but it looks like he will be given every opportunity to win the job. Any thoughts on the open competition at safety? Edited March 15, 2014 by bcw
JEvans14
As of this moment I'd say Duke is the favorite to win the spot, but alot can change between now and September. Quote [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
bigvinny
lets at least wait until after the draft to start freaking out: this guy would be a perfect 2nd round pick: Dion Bailey, S, USC Height: 6-0. Weight: 201. 40 Time: 4.66. Projected Round (2014): 2-3.
bcw
I just came across a list of fs's Schwartz has had over the years. Tennessee: Lance Schulters (Vet) – Pretty solid Pro (Nothing special though) Lamont Thompson (Rook) – Nothing Special – Came in and played as a rookie Calvin Lowry (Rook) – Defiantly nothing Special Michael Griffin (Young) – Solid Pro again nothing special Detroit: Louis Delmas (Rook) – Solid pro Nothing too special. Not surprised he stresses d-line play more than safety, which is definitely this team's strength.

gunnar_zero
They drafted Williams and Meeks last year fin case Byrd left. Both have potential
newtredeuce
Searcy did not play too bad last year either. Yes Byrd is a loss but he obviously did not want to be in Buffalo and as a player you wont play the same somewhere you dont really want to be compared to somewhere you want or are excited to play. Byrd left because he got the money and believes that they have a chance to go back to the SB.
bcw
I agree that Searcy didn't play badly. He has the size you look for in a ss, rushed the passer when asked to and forced some turn overs. There may be match ups in coverage he will struggle with but there are ways to cover that up.
