bigvinny
https://twitter.com/JoeBuscaglia "Williams is a former 1st round pick of the Bears. Started every game at guard for the Rams last season." Williams (6’6” 320) is a veteran offensive lineman who has lined up at guard and tackle. The Vanderbilt product has played most of the last two seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He started all 16 games in 2013 at left guard for the Rams. Thirty-six of his 54 career starts have come at guard with another 18 at tackle. A former first-round pick of the Chicago Bears in 2008, Williams is set to enter his seventh NFL season.
bcw
Huge lineman who can play guard or tackle. Don't know much about him but he looks like he'd be a decent signing. Definitely won't break the bank.
bigvinny
G Chris Williams signing a four-year, $13.5 million deal that includes $5.5 million guaranteed with the Buffalo Bills.
bcw
I like this signing. Both he and Hairston can play guard or tackle in a pinch.
orthy
Graded out last year 74th out of 81 guards last year. I guess they couldn't convince Jerry Crafts to come out of retirement so they went with Plan B. foster
I like that they are addressing a need to get bigger on the O-line. This is a player that is versatile and is a proven starter, starting all last season in St. Louis. The fact that he graded out 74/81 doesn't bother me a bit. Would I have liked the Bills to make a bigger splash at the position, of course, but they found someone they liked and fits their need without breaking the bank so they can spend more $$ elsewhere. This also allows them more flexibility when the draft rolls around. Not that they can forget about upgrading the O-Line if available, but it's not a first or second round need now. bcw
No, he isn't a star, but the o-line is a unit and playing between Glenn and Wood should make his job much easier. Look at rosters around the league. Teams can't afford to have high priced players across the entire line. He has played in the NFL for 6 years and the deal isn't so much that if someone like Hairston beat him out it won't hurt to keep him on the roster. emiller1181
He came into the league as a tackle as well so he's got some versatility. miamibillsnut
it took me all of 5 minutes to realize why I went into football hibernation. I check into NFL.com and Byrd gone, Bills spend $13.5 million on a turd backup lineman. I invite you to go read the comments on the signing in NFL.com from Bears and Rams fans. I'll go back into my cave. Somebody wake me up when Ralph dies or sells the team. Quote Sin is nothing to celebrate, have pride in, or hold parades for. Victor7
Seems like we overpaid for a very average player. 74 out of 81 ??? Legursky 2.0 ?? Guess its better than overpaying for an All Pro safety Quote Bills fan for life!! ................ bcw
Overpaid? He is a starter or at worst depth at guard and tackle. The $5.5 million guaranteed I assume is his bonus ($1.5 million?) and two years ($2 million/year). That is not overpaying in today's NFL for a veteran o-lineman. Nuke
It seems like the Bills have focused on stocking up on underwhelming OGs the last 12 months. Quote Ed Oliver is my adopt-a-Bill
westphal
I don't pretend to know every single player in the league, but I do not like what I'm reading about this guy whatsoever. Take this for example: The analytics website ProFootballFocus.com graded him as the worst player on the Rams and as one of the worst guards in the NFL. This article has NOTHING good to say: http://espn.go.com/blog/buffalo-bills/post/_/id/7936/bills-taking-odd-risk-in-signing-williams Maybe Marrone has a soft-spot for lineman who are not very good, since he was one himself. Maybe the Bills thought that FIVE guys named Williams wasn't enough, and felt the need to add a sixth. Dunno, but I've yet to find someone that doesn't think the Bills are fools to pay Chris Williams like they did.

bcw
I'm certainly not thrilled about what I've read about him but ill see what he can do on the field before judging him. Whaley must feel he can get by with a journeyman LG if he surrounds him with a solid LT and C. Right now it looks like the Bills will target a RT in the 1st or 2nd. Add in a midround guard to develop and that's the o-line. As a unit i rate them as average to slightly above average, depending on if they get one to the top 3 OT's. junglesouljah
Chris Williams is an average player but an upgrade over Doug Legursky and a huge upgrade over Colin Brown. The Bills may bring in a rookie OG in the mid to late rounds to compete with Williams but the Bills are in a good position with a Veteran like Williams at LG in situation that the rookie can't start right away. I agree with bcs, that RT is a priority in the daft and they will take a talented RT with LT skills in the 1st or 2nd round. All three have top 10 talent and one of them should drop to the Bills 9th overall with A.Barr(OLB UCLA), B.Bortles(QB C.Flordia),J.Clowney (DE S.Carolina),S.Watkins(WR Clemson), J.Manziel(QB Texas A&M), K.Mack(OLB Buffalo) T.Bridgewater(QB Louisville), J.Gilbert (CB Oklahoma ST.), E.Ebron(TE N.C.) all possible top 8 picks.
