buffalocalzone
By not franchise-tagging Jairus Byrd again, the Buffalo Bills might stand a better chance of signing him to a long-term deal, John Kryk of the Toronto Sun reports. That's what Bills general manager Doug Whaley said during the University of Buffalo's pro day. "I think it just sets up a more amicable negotiation, because last year -- I wouldn't say it was contentious, but as a player you always want to go out and see your true value, and we restricted that," Whaley said. So this year we said, 'For the betterment of the Buffalo Bills, and to show you more or less good faith, we're not going to use that option to restrict you from hitting the market. Let's try to go full bore, with both of us focused on trying to get a deal done.'" http://www.theredzone.org/BlogDescription/tabid/61/EntryId/40928/Bills-GM-says-not-tagging-Byrd--sets-up-more-amicable-negotiation-/Default.aspx Quote when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. Tim M
After holding the franchise tag over Byrds head like a sword of Damocles, right upto the final week before they must use the tag. To then suggest you decided not to use the tag to make negotiations more amicable, is laughable. The time to make this gesture was months ago, that is if you really wanted to make talks more friendly. Doug, Please dont treat Bills fans like we are stupid. This just makes you look foolish and weak. Michael
Byrd is going to be a free agent for all of about five minutes before another team signs him to a huge contract. You can bullshit some of the people some of the time but not most of the Bills fans most of the time. We've been here, done this, got the Stupid GM Move Of The Year Award, wash, rinse, repeat. Quote The Rules Of The Range 1) Every thought should be a thread. 2) The Bills should seriously consider every available player. 3) Every good player wants to play for the Bills. 4) Every team with a need to fill is looking at trading with the Bills. SabreBill30
I don't take it that way. I take it that they aren't tagging because they aren't close to signing. Byrd is done here. The move was for those that will be coming up on contract. Quote My Retired AAB is Kyle Williams... bcw
What's with everyone piling on Whaley? He made his offer and gave Byrd permission to see if he can beat it. This leads me to believe that at least the offer is competitive. I don't blame Whaley for not wanting a hold out, especially for a player who would be gone next year anyway. The money will be spent somewhere else if he walks.

I've got to agree, I think the Bills presented Byrd with the best offer they thought he was worth (which to me sounds like it was substantial and would have made him the highest paid FS in the NFL) but he wants to see what he gets on the open market, from a possible contender with stability. I think this is a lot less to do with money then Bills are making it out to be, if he can get a similar amount from a team like Denver that looks as if it is on the verge of winning the big one... of course he is going to jump ship! He's had a different D coordinator almost every year since he has been here and until last year every D we put on the field while he was here as a MISERABLE failure. I'm not sure if this is more of the same from OBD or more of the same from the "I love to be miserable" Bills fans who complain no matter what... Edited March 8, 2014 by Maz double post? Spiderweb
Polian also noted that Byrd is a speed deficient safety. When in position, he surely can make plays, but far too often I recall him going the wrong way or simply too slow to track down long throws against the Bills.
