John Dudley: Byrd appears determined to tell Bills goodbye

Sometimes players won't sign. They offered him 30 mil over 3 years...you guys would have paid more than that?

It hurts now, but I'm reserving judgment until I see how the D is assembled and how effective it is without him.

If we end up with a top 10 defense this year while paying a safety half as much as Byrd makes is it still a bad move?

It came out today that the 3 year, 30 million was not accurate, according to wgr.

It came out that it wasn't $30 million guaranteed, right? Doesn't mean he couldn't have made that much with incentives.

It's pretty clear that playing in Buffalo isn't that important. Finding a trading partner for a guy under a 1 year deal who wants 10+ million a year isn't easy.

It sucks, screw it, see ya Byrd. Have fun in DC or whatever organization is willing to blow a shitload of money on you. God I hope he ends up in DC.

I believe that to be a bunch of bullshit. I don't see the Bills offering that much. Put that smokescreen so fans can be mad at Byrd and not the front office. I have nothing but hate for this front office because all they do is sell us false hope and bullshit

Man how quickly the Mario Williams buzz wears off. WE HAVE THE HIGHEST PAID DEFENDER IN THE LEAGUE. STOP WITH THE CHEAP NONSENSE.

There have been many instances where fans were pissed to see a guy go and then only to find out that he is more easily replaced than not.

Screw him then. Sign Delmas. Delmas is not as good, but the drop off won't be as bad as everyone thinks.

I hope Byrd goes to Philadelphia. I already hate them so much this will just give me another reason.

.

To be honest I did not see a drop off when Jim Leonard went in there and played for Byrd as he sat out with 2 bad feet. Now go sign Eugene Monroe or Jared Veldheer

Its Jason Peters all over. OBD with all of their ineptitude and 10+ years of FAIL expect us to believe they really put out that offer ?? That they exhausted all options ?? Yeah right. They are just trying to save face now and get the fans to turn on Byrd. Not to mention that even if true this all could've been avoided if he had been extended last year as he duly deserved. Like I said jut like with Peters and how we offered to make him "one of the highest paid" tackles in the game. Funny how similar the situations are.

Another massive hit from our drafts that will walk out the door for nothing in return. That's also the 2nd straight year it happens for anyone counting. This obviously seems like the right recipe for success. Hit on your picks !! .... and then let them go. I tell ya the Super Bowl is around the corner !

The Bills decided what Byrd was worth and offered him that much, which I'm sure was a very fair deal. He turned it down. What are they supposed to do? Pay him more than you think he is worth? No thanks.

Byrd is a great player but as long as they plan on spending his money I'm fine with letting him walk. I was never thrilled with paying that much for a safety.

Byrd turned down 10 million a year??? Gimme a break, he aint worth it.

Go back and watch the tape, there was no drop off when Leonard filled in for him. He will go off to the highest paying team and be above average at 12 million a year.

Byrd missed all pre-season and I think 5 games due to Plantar fasciitis coming in with plenty of rest during the off season. Coincidence ? I doubt it he just got tagged and was not happy in my opinion.

And as was stated several times the offer made was good maybe not great but good and if he wanted to be here he would take it. You all really think his plantar fasciitis would not mysteriously start acting up again if he was tagged ?

I have a friend who has plantar fasciitis and sounds like it is painful but I would think he would have played every other game rather than conveniently miss pre-season and the first 5 and then play the rest. Its his ticket out of Buffalo if you ask me.

Good players leave teams all the time...that's how free agency exists. Byrd was a little cry-baby who was mad at the system. He hated being tagged last year and then pretty much faked (or at least hid) an injury because of it. He is a really good player, but a lot of people around here are getting selective memory in terms of how often Buffalo let's "good" players walk. You can't pay everyone and I was never thrilled about paying 9 mil for a safety that only makes plays at one level of the defense (a lot of plays I grant you). Also you mention that it happened for the 2nd straight year so I guess you're referring to Levitre. If you would have paid him what the Titans paid him then you're crazy. Certainly couldn't have paid him, and Wood...who they did extend. You can't pay every player top dollar.

Now, if/when this happens to a guy like Dareus, or Glenn or Gilmore (if he keeps getting better and better) maybe I'll put some stock in it.

It sucks he's going to leave, but this just goes to show you how much teams value the safety position.

This is what a player would make under the franchise tag this year.

Quarterback: $16.912 million.

Running back: $9.54 million.

Receiver: $12.312 million.

Tight end: $7.035 million.

Offensive line: $11.654 million.

Defensive end: $13.116 million.

Defensive tackle: $9.654 million.

Linebacker: $11.455 million.

Cornerback: $11.834 million.

Safety: $8.433 million.

Kicker/punter: $3.556 million.

Only kickers and TE's make less. It's not a high priority position. It's not a position you break the bank for. Listen to Whaley, they came up with a number that they thought Byrd was worth. Byrd and Parker did the same. Whaley says multiple times that they couldn't come to a middle ground. If I had to bet, Byrd and Parker aren't budging. Maybe the Bills aren't budging either, but they've got deals done with a number of players recently, so I'm included to believe OBD has some leeway.

If Byrd was a start QB, then hell yeah, pony up the extra cash. Not for a safety or LG though.

No bro. Good players don't leave the teams that drafted them all the time. At least not the good teams. If you really think that hitting on draft picks and then letting them go is the norm I don't know what to tell you.

I was fine with letting Levitre walk because in theory that money was to pay Byrd which of course didn't happen despite 20+ mill of cap space. Been saying that I expected Byrd to leave because the relationship was broken last season thanks to our cheapness and ineptitude.

Wanna bet that 2 of those 3 players you just mentioned walk ??

Whaley was talking about how they couldn't meet in the middle, when your the Buffalo Bills you don't have the luxary of meeting in the middle. Face it guys the only reason Mario Williams came here was strictly about the money. They didn't meet in the middle, they knew they had to throw the most money at him for him to come to Buffalo.

So are you suggesting that they should have overpaid Byrd when they have him slotted at a certain dollar amount?

In my mind Byrd isn't that type of player who you give a blank check to. The Bills can sign two solid players with that money. Hopefully they will.

We have been losing our top picks the past 15 years don't know why whis is all the sudden gonna change.

Wood

Urbik

Pears

Fred

Stevie

Kyle

McKelvin

Chandler

That's 8 starters that are on their 2nd deal with the Bills.

Compare that to the Pats

Brady

Dan Connolly

Logan Mankins

Rob Nichovinch

Gronk

Jerrod Mayo

Kyle Arrington

I'm sure I'm missing a guy or two, but that's only 7.

They also haven't extended Ryan Wendell who's a free agent who started all 16 games. They also haven't reached out to McCourty who's an all-pro and who's deal ends next year. Since they have Brady though, they win and it doesn't hurt them to lose guys. Sure, they may not have lost guys as good as Byrd or Peters, but you get the point.

You guys see why we don't crucify the Bills at every junction?

Victor7 I couldn't agree with you more. I myself thought that since we didn't get Levitre that money would be used for Byrd. I know people say we are being pessimistic but we have no other choice to be that because of what the Bills' front office has showed us the past 15 years. I bet 2 of those 3 players do walk too. Whaley was talking about how they couldn't meet in the middle, when your the Buffalo Bills you don't have the luxary of meeting in the middle. We have been losing our top picks the past 15 years don't know why whis is all the sudden gonna change. Change starts all the way up top ( the fish rots from the head). I don't buy that Buffalo gave Byrd anywhere near 3 years 30 mil in first 3 years. Byrd specifally didn't say how much he turned down but he said in this league when you get an unamed source most of the time it's false. What i read from that comment is that Buffalo didn't offer what they're trying to say they offered. They are just trying to make fans angry at Byrd and not at the front office. People say im just being a debbie downer but until the Bills front office proves me wrong I have nothing but hate for them. I will always love my Bills but can't stand the bullshit the front office feeds us and the fans that actually buy into what they're saying. Victor7 I agree with everything you stated in your previous comment and it's sad that people don't see it.

Agreed word for word Peter. Its sad that this team is run the way it is.

None of those guys are among their position's elite E ... I mean I'm not trying to diss anybody but none of those guys are ever in the sentence of league's best this or that. Solid players for sure but not elite. Byrd is elite, so was Levitre, so was Clements, so was Peters. When it comes to the big time deals we cheap out more often than not. Every 3 or 4 years they shell out a big one ala Mario last year. But they don't do it consistently and it usually leads to us losing the talent on the team.

And don't get me started on not tagging Byrd. That is just retarded beyond words. We are gonna lose him for nothing. Nada, zilch. And I laugh at the ones saying his money can be used on more players. Yeah right. Watch us end up again 20+ on the cap.

Are you serious ??? Peters has made the All Pro team twice since he left. That includes last season. Nice try

Levitre's been gone for one year, in which he started all 16 games. Why don't we wait and see before we say he "did nothing"

I'll give you Clements. But you missed the point anyway. We don't pay elite talent.

"Leave No Stone Unturned" "Draft Well and Retain Your Own Stars" "Build Through the Draft" "Don't confuse effort with results" Those are just some of the quotes Bills fans have heard repeatedly from the Bills front office as they preach patience to a fan base who has been subjected to sub-mediocrity for well over a decade now.

http://www.profootballwarroom.com/stone-unturned

ADMarc delivers. Read it and learn homers. Agreed with every word. It takes 2 to tango and Byrd seems to be ready to take off. But all of this was avoidable had we addressed the issue in time. There's 2 to blame here. But the vast majority of the blame goes to our inept front office as usual.
