Doug Whaley: Bills GM Set to Strut His Stuff

Jason DeHart in Buffalo Bills

Buffalo Bills General Manager Doug Whaley wrapped up his first NFL Combine as the head personnel man for the Buffalo Bills and in doing so he takes another step in marking the organization with his fingerprints for the first time; this despite being GM of the team for the past nine months.

When former Bills GM Buddy Nix stepped down from his post back on May 13th 2013, Whaley was a groomed GM in waiting for the Bills and he made the easy transition from second in command to front office shot caller. Nix set up Whaley fairly well with talent currently on the roster and with a supposed franchise quarterback drafted just that year. Between those factors and the available cap space, Nix has positioned Whaley to succeed not just now, but long term.

We need him to succeed. Nix was a massive FAIL.

Hope he can over come the obstacles (Ralph and his goons) and give us a winning team for freaking change

Massive fail? Bit of hyperbole here. He brought some top players here and brought our cupboard of talent up. Spiller, Gilmore, Dareus, Alonso, Aaron Williams, Cordy Glenn, Robert Woods, Searcy, Carrington, signing Mario Williams. He has had some bad drafts too, glaringly bad but I wouldn't constitute this talent to stipulate a massive fail.

Maybe massive was too much. But he was more fail than win. Our record is proof enough.

And out of those players you just listed Searcy and Carrington are nobodies, last year's draft IMO is all Whaley, Nix was already on the way out. Spiller is still a disappointment whether we like it or not.

Not all was bad but it was certainly more bad than good.

I was going to dispute your original post as well, but the more I thought about it, you're probably right. I also like to point to the "talent" he has given this roster but talent wins games and we don't. I still don't know if I'd call it "massive" but it was more fail than success. His legacy will hang largely on EJ. If EJ becomes the guy then it will be a huge boon to what Nix did. But if EJ fails, then Nix has failed. He hired the head coach. He neglected to draft a QB and decided to roll with Fitz. He had 3 years and we never even got to .500 so I don't know how else to classify that other than a failure. Maybe the only saving grace for him was that none of us really know how bad the situation was. He did inherit a team that hadn't made the playoffs in over a decade but he wasn't able to change that.

Victor7......do you really live in Mexico City? If so, do people follow football down there? Are the games on TV?

Yeah bro.

Football is huuuge down here. Millions of followers, 2nd largest market behind the US obviously. We get some games on the open networks, a couple more on ESPN or Fox and if you can afford it Sunday Ticket is also available.

Agreed. Although I think that if Manuel fails its gonna be more on Whaley. I really think Nix had very little to do with last year's draft since he was already known to be on the way out.

But you're right about everything else. He hired Gailey and let him ride with Fitz for 3 years without doing anything about it. That's all Nix.
