I was listening to a podcast, of a film critic that’s around my age, and he was talking about politics in the 80s. You went and you voted and rarely thought about politics again unless a big news story broke. We all had lives. Now, you can’t get away from politics. They dominate our movies and tv shows. You can’t go on social media without getting beat over the head with them. Usually conspiracies and exaggerations, like real politics aren’t bad enough, and always hateful. They’ve even spilled over into our sports. I try to avoid this section, but, once or twice a week, I get bored enough to come here. I’ll see something that I’ll have an opinion on and I’ll post it. Not looking to really start a conversation because I realize I’m not changing anyone’s mind  and they’re not changing mine. It’s a waste of time. One poster in particular will quotes 90% of what I say regardless of where it is on the spectrum. I usually see who it is and won’t take the bait, because when I do it always turns into confrontational insults and labels. I personally won’t miss this section

Four things I'd love to go back to:

1. The world before social media.  

2. The world before Talk Radio

3. The world before the internet 

4. The world before the 24/7 cable "news" cycle.

Before these, there was stupidity.  As long as humans have existed there have been fuckups, but the stupidity was generally localized.  Now, its viral.  Don't believe me? Look at flat earthers.  500 years before Christ we knew not only that the world was round but to within a couple hundred miles of its circumference.  The internet and social media are largely to blame for the viral stupidity.

Before talk radio, there was anger at politicians but the incessant incandescent rage was not there nearly as much.  

Before the 24/7 news cycle there was in depth commentary and social criticism and analysis about society and politics from local to global in most newspapers.  I mean actual researched discussion of major events.  Now its just inflammatory hot takes with little to no analysis.
