Crazy Legs
OP - I really liked what I saw from Christian Benford at Corner last year. I have never agreed with handing the CB2 job outright to Elam. Sounds like today in OTAs it really is a competition, and Benford is still in it. Christian Benford going to make things tough on coaching staff BY MATT PARRINO - May 23rd Benford was a bottle full of juice throughout practice, making a number of big plays and elevating the competitive spirit on several passing downs throughout the afternoon. Benford made life difficult on Shorter on a few reps, and one he bodied the bigger receiver at the catch point and broke up a pass from Matt Barkley. It didn’t matter which receiver lined up across from Benford, the second-year cornerback was competing hard The Bills love Dane Jackson and DB Coach John Butler said the CB2 competition is between Jackson, Benford and 2022 first-round pick Kaiir Elam. Benford is playing only at cornerback for the Bills right now, per Butler, despite whispers all offseason that a move to safety might be in the cards for the former sixth-round pick. Benford’s toughness, competitive spirit, and high football IQ will make things interesting for the position battle.

Last year Benford played better than Elam in pre-season, so for the opener Benford started over Elam. Obviously you want to play the best player, whether they are an undrafted free agent, or a 1st rounder. As it should be.

I think he struggled with off man and he didn't play nearly as much zone in college. I think that gave Benford a slight leg up to start the season. I think it's a good problem to have two guys that can start at a CB2 level, but I think it will be easier to teach a superior athlete how to play zone than a lesser athlete to be a man corner. You don't see guys who are good in man coverage being talked about as potential safeties IMO. I want the defense to be able to play man coverage against good QBs who can pick apart zone. Make them throw into tighter windows. I think Elam gives them more of that versatility.
Baldat28
They should be hoping Elam wins the job, you trade up in the 1st to get him and if Benford beats him again, not a good look for him or the GM for that matter
