micknaboz
Republicans are hellbent on destroying the economy President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy are meeting Monday afternoon for further talks on the impending debt ceiling crisis, following another warning on Sunday from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen that June 1 is the “hard deadline” for avoiding a default. Don’t expect much in the way of progress with this meeting: McCarthy set the tone early, saying Monday morning, “It's very hard to get [Democrats] off that spending spree that they're addicted to.” He has rejected any form of increasing revenue, like repealing the "fundamentally flawed" tax cuts Republicans handed billionaires in 2017, insisting on spending cuts that economists say will cause a recession. It’s either that or default, which would result in economic catastrophe. Republicans don't seem to care who gets hit by the shrapnel. The “who” starts with veterans and seniors, who are pretty much going to be screwed either way. As NPR reports, two big bills come due on June 1 and 2, and the first days of every month: $12 billion for veterans’ benefits and $25 billion for Social Security benefits. The best case after default is that the Treasury would be able to figure out some way to pay these obligations, albeit delayed. And delayed benefits for veterans and seniors could mean rent and mortgages and utilities not getting paid, prescriptions going unfilled, and cupboards and fridges going empty. “These are people on very low, sometimes fixed incomes that rely on these payments as a lifeline to pay for housing, to pay for food, to pay for expenses for children and other family members,” Cole Lyle, a Marine Corps veteran and executive director of the veterans advocacy group Mission Roll Call, told NPR. “So it could be potentially very crippling.” Even if Biden and McCarthy come to some agreement to avoid default and the drastic cuts Republicans are insisting on are implemented, there will still be pain for these two groups in particular. On paper, Republicans say they’re holding Medicare, Social Security, and veterans health care sacred. They won’t let those programs be cut. But adhering to the level of cuts Republicans are demanding means that housing, food assistance, and utility help all get cut. It means that the federal employees who staff the agencies that help them are cut, too, which means delays in all sorts of services, including benefit claims. more: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2023/5/22/2170719/-Republicans-are-hellbent-on-destroying-the-economy 1 Quote [/img]

micknaboz
More lying from POS Republicans. At a recent press conference, McCarthy was asked why his party voted to suspend the federal debt limit three times under Trump and is now refusing to do so under President Biden. He responded by falsely claiming the increases were all under Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. In reality, two of the debt limit increases came when Republicans held the House majority, with McCarthy serving as majority leader and Rep. Paul Ryan as House speaker. Speaker Kevin McCarthy lies about debt limit increases he voted for under Donald Trump The California Republican blamed Democrats for two bills he helped pass as House majority leader. micknaboz
Amid debt ceiling impasse, House GOP auctions off lip balm for $100,000 Amid sputtering debt ceiling negotiations and dire warnings of an unprecedented default, House Republicans found time to finalize at least one deal on Tuesday: the sale of a lip balm reportedly used by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.). https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/23/mccarthy-greene-lip-balm-auction-debt-ceiling/?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_source=facebook&fbclid=IwAR3BoUubqYXPWIje4vqIhwf_0zvBwZSEHSdqDOV1r82dRIWVNltc-oHV9zM Quote [/img]

Why would they risk everything? It's because he was ending them. But now, all he has to do is simply sit back and watch them destroy themselves. Dammit!! They lost socdem?? WTF are they gonna do NOW!!!??? Wait, didn't you post this prior to 2020?? How'd that work out? Quote “There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. HipKat
You can't solve this without both spending cuts and revenue increases. Both sides need to carefully look at spending without favoring political agenda. The GOP is looking the right way with across the board cuts, although this should include defense. But Biden and crew are also correct that this is not the time to do tax cuts, especially since the proposed cuts are greater than the spending cuts. For all the rhetoric, the GOP plan would increase the deficit. Finally, agree to stop this debt ceiling nonsense and start talking about the future. As many have pointed out, this is money already spent and refusing to pay when the bill comes due is just stupid. Quote “There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. micknaboz
Perhaps there may be a bit of hyperbole in this, but since it's never happened before we don't know, but you can bet some of it for sure will happen. It's already being talked about lowering our credit rating which will cost us tens (hundred) of millions of dollars. We do know Republicans are intent on crashing the economy refusing any compromise at all. They'll only do it to try and damage Biden, consequences be damned. 1 1 Quote [/img]
micknaboz
Well it appears DARK BRANDON has pulled it off and we have a budget deal, at least in principle. A few things in there I don't like, but you can't always get what you want. Though most think we could have by invoking the 14th amendment. Biden may have felt that that was a politically wrong move. And still the thought of default and its consequences. One of the best parts is the Dems got the debt ceiling extended for two years, which means it won't come up again till after the 2024 election. the Dems are thrilled about that part. The House Freedom Caucus is livid cause they didn't come close to getting what they wanted. This may very well mark the end of McCarthy's tenure. Another loss for El Trumpo as he had been lobbying Republicans to not make a deal and thereby force a default. That's just a few thoughts, it will certainly be all over the news with many others. What I'm seeing thus far: Non-defense discretionary spending only goes up 1% this year. Non-enforceable limits on appropriations beyond this year. IRS funding to go after tax cheats redirected toward domestic programs to avert cuts. (This one is bullshit, a gift to the oligarghs and corporations) New work requirements for food assistance (a GOP demand), raising the age of non-dependent recipients to 54, from 49, exempting veterans and the homeless. Medicaid left untouched. The GOP budget recently passed added work requirements to that program (and others) as well Deal last for two years, beyond next presidential election My condolences to all you RWNJ's here getting bitch slapped by Biden again. j/k 1 1 Quote [/img]
