* Pre-Draft Interest * = WR Jordan Addison, USC

Recommended Posts

Jordan Addison met with the #Bills “around his campus Pro Day after meeting with them formally at the #NFL scouting combine” per @AaronWilson_NFL

NOTE   This is not a 30 Pre-draft visit (prospect comes to Buffalo), but does indicate some interest in the player.

WR Jordan Addison, USC, 5'11",  173 lbs, 30 7/8’’ arms, 4.49 forty

Inside/outside wideout with the speed and agility to work confidently on all three levels of the field, but lacking the size and catch strength generally associated with high-impact performers on the next level. Addison’s route running features acceleration, dynamic steering and sudden turns at a moment’s notice. While he can get to the spot effectively, he has trouble consistently winning battles when he has coverage company beside him. While Addison failed to make the same impact he did in 2021, his usage at Pitt might be a better indicator of the type of role and production he could be capable of on the next level.

Projected 1st round.   Pro Comp = Tyler Lockett

My take:  Tyler Lockett was a 3rd round pick, and about 10 pounds heavier.   Addison does have good RAC, but also has drops from time to time. He is a good WR, but you have to ask how you would use him as a #2 WR?  On the outside?   Does he have the size to be your #2?

He'd be fine, reminds me a lot of Diggs, from what I've seen from him he seems like a great route runner

Diggs doesn't look like a big guy on the field right?

Diggs is 6'0" and 191lbs.
Addison is 5'11" 173lbs.

Addison had a 11.6% drop rate at Pittsburgh (over 2 years).

Gabe Davis?    In his first two seasons in the NFL, Davis had a drop rate of 6.4% with six drops on 125 targets.
in 2022 Gabe's drop rate increased to 9.7% with nine drops on 93 targets.

We would have to be cool with a WR that has a higher drop rate than Gabe.

I am fine with the receivers we have (I realize we need an upgrade at WR-2) if they can continue to build the OL in the draft. OL continues to be the top priority. Imagine how good the offense would be if Josh had time to throw from the pocket as well as an improved running game with the RB's doing the running. Even with the current group of receivers we have the Bills would be so much better on offense with a better OL. Last year the Bills OL ranked #26 in the league. That is unacceptable for a team that is supposed to be a Super Bowl contender.

Drops certainly are a concern but sometimes the number can be deceptive.

Yes Addison had an 11.6% drop rate in his two years at Pitt but one of those years he was a freshman, catching 60 passes in 10 games. That's a lot of action for a freshman.

His sophomore year he had 100 catches.

I don't know what type of passes these drops were but with the way Pitt focused their passing game around him defenses must have been focusing on him and the majority of these passes were highly contested rather than easy dump offs.

As well, with an average yards per catch of 14.3 for his career many of these passes were down field, which have a higher % of drops.

Greg Cossell, who I respect, seems to really like Addison. Id be happy with him or Flowers at 27.

Drops are hard to evaluate.   But just keep the eyes open on him.   If he drops more balls than Gabe, which apparently he has, Bills fans will be calling for his head.

Plus he is only 173lbs.   Cole Beasley weighs 174lbs.   So pretty much the same size.

The style of offense we play, the play calling last year, lack of a slot, and Josh Allen’s affinity for going for the “big play” are all reasons, along with the offensive line play on why Josh scrambles so much.  We have a better OL right now, than last year, add one more OT to compete with Brown.

While we seemingly will have better slot play next year, we still don’t have a WR2, and I don’t know we can get one at 27 in the draft, not saying someone can’t develop into a WR2, but to expect someone we will get at or past pick 27 to step in next year and perform at that level is unrealistic.

I agree. A wr draft pick is going to take time to develop into our #2, but I’m fine with that. Beane has to plan for the future and find someone who will be ready to step in when Gabe is gone next year.

It looked like Shakir was ready to contribute last season but obviously McDermott didn’t trust him even when injuries started to pile up. I can’t imagine McDermott will throw a draft pick in this year and deal with the rookie mistakes even if they are a 1st round pick. We saw that with Elam sitting early.

You are speaking my language.  I would much rather add OL than a WR.  It will make Josh better, and our existing WRs better.

Sure, I would like to add Justin Jefferson or Lamar Chase to the roster, but we have a decent crop of guys now:

Diggs, Gabe, Shakir, Trent Sherfield, Deonte Harty, plus Dawson Knox and Nyheim Hines.

It is not like Josh is throwing to no one.

Plus, this year the 3rd and 4th round will have some quality WRs if we want to add another one on top of what we have.

Davis will have a monster year if they can find someone else to go deep with Diggs. Bills are hoping Harty is that guy.

I more diversified route tree for Gabe will certainly make Gabe appear to be "better".

I happen to think Gabe is a solid WR, and a good find in the 4th round.    Expectations are too high for him, IMO.   He had 48 receptions, 836 yards this year and avg 17 yards per catch.  That is a solid year.

I definitely don’t want to give Gabe an expensive extension next year and drafting his replacement this draft allows our pick to have a year to develop before having to really step up as the #2.

I’d be really happy with Addison or Flowers.
