US Bill S. 686: The Restrict Act – 20 Years In Prison For VPN Use?

The S.686 Restriction Act is more than just a ban on TikTok

 

As the title says, this bill is not only a ban on TikTok. It is much more invasive. Here is the short and sweet:

*Modems, Routers, Mobile networks, VPNs (personal phones, laptops, etc)... Are BANNED if used to contact any any "foreign adversaries" (such as Korea, China, Cuba, Iran) Also this is subject to change, meaning anywhere in Europe could be next if deemed "appropriate")

*If you are found using a VPN to bypass banned content, you are now a criminal. You can face up to 20 years in jail and a $250,000 fine. OR $1mil if you knowingly used a VPN to access this said content.

*If this bill is PASSED. The government has liberty to appoint a secretary of communication to create a small group that can ban/deem ANYTHING innapropriate or risk to security (VOTERS CANNOT HAVE INPUT ON THEIR DECISIONS). Essentially, they can go through our emails, DMs, texts, etc if they deem appropriate.

*The Bill gives our government the power to monitor any activity used by the devices listed above (including home cameras i.e. Ring). (ESSENTIALLY, they can access our in-home cameras and literally spy on us at any time without even informing us, if they deem appropriate)

Overall, this is 100% infringements on human rights.

I’m not arguing with the premise, that more regulations, restrictions and penalties on our devices and internet use are more govt control.

I see the downfall of America differently than most -- and I do believe the US is falling. The right blames the left and the left blames the right. As a centrist I blame both camps.

I see things I like in both party platforms and I see things I don't like in both party platforms. (I'm basically a man without a party.) This roughly 50-50 divide in our country will eventually tear us apart. Neither side wants to compromise -- you can see it in a small way in almost every thread here on this forum. I don't see any solution to this problem, and our two-party political system just exacerbates the problem.

Maybe if we had a coalition-style or parliamentary-style government, which would require compromise, viable independent parties could evolve and we could survive. Today, an independent candidate just acts as a spoiler. As is, if a political party wins 50.1 percent of the vote then they can just ignore the needs and requirements of the other 49.9 percent -- that isn't right.

And as a centrist (independent?) I have to hold my nose and pick a side come election time because it's always the choice between two plates of crap, one more foul-smelling than the other.
