Buffalo Bills have signed LG David Edwards, Free Agent

Recommended Posts

While David Edwards plays other positions on the Oline, he most recently started at LEFT guard for the Rams.  (Although he was concussed onto IR last year)

The Bills just signed Connor McGovern, who was told by the Bills he would play LEFT guard, and not right.

Competition?   Based on McGovern's salary, he would be an expensive backup.

Connor McGovern signed a 3 year, $22,350,000 contract with the Buffalo Bills, including a $8,000,000 signing bonus, $11,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $7,450,000.

David Edwards started 17 games in 2021 at Left Guard.   Allowing 6 sacks (a bit high)
His PFF grade was 66.9, which is decent

He played a ton in 2020 as well, taking 1006 snaps and receiving a PFF grade of 70.  Allowed 3 sacks.

In 2022, he only started 4 games, had a concussion, tried to come back, concussion again, then put on IR.

So he worked with our OLine coach?  Maybe he moves to RG and we trade/cut Bates?

Bates has been and will only ever be a NFL back up

Bates competition....to me Bates should be the primary backup swing G and C....though his salary is a bit high for a backup....I'd be surprised if they take a lineman, interior anyway, in the first or even second....fine by me, the interior lineman have the value in the third and fourth anyway, guys like Patterson and Mafi and Vorhees (who could be undrafted now with his injury), could all be available later.....I hope they don't pass on a T if a good ones there though

If we cut Bates this year, the DEAD CAP hit is $6,525,000

So it would be better financially to have him guard the tackling dummies in practice then cut him.

If David Edwards can switch to Right Guard and beat out Ryan Bates, cool.   Bates is a good backup at Left Guard and Center and Right Guard.
We need good backups.   17 game season means probably you backups will play at some point.

David Edwards only signed a one year deal, and Ryan Bates has a trap door in his contract after this year, and Mitch Morse is close to the end, so I would still draft an IOL high in the draft.   Groom him to start in 2024, as Edwards, Bates and/or Morse may not be here in 2024.

You got me thinking, and it is a hard decision.  Do or should the Bills attempt to build for the future with a high draft pick, that won’t contribute much this year OR do they draft to get the best combination of players this year in order to help win a championship?  Beane said he wants the team to be competitive every year.   I would like that as well but I would take loosing seasons in the future for a championship next year.

He would too for guaranteed championship win, but that’s never guaranteed. Better to compete every year.

Back in the day of the Bills Golden Years, they drafted OLinemen, over time. To protect their QB, i.e. Jim Kelly.

They didn't use all their picks on OLine every year, but the did invest high picks spread out.

Will Wolford - 1st round pick
Howard Ballard
Glenn Parker - 3rd round pick
John Fina - 1st round pick
Ruben Brown - 1st round pick

If you get a stud offensive linemen, he could be there for Josh for 10 years.  So I do think it is worth making the investment.
Besides, look at Greg Rousseau and Kaiir Elam, they didn't move the needle in their rookie years.   I doubt anyone we would draft this year in the 1st round will move the needle this year either.

LT are taken usually with top 10 picks.  RT usually middle to bottom of first round or day two pick

C are usually taken in the bottom of the first or day 2.

Guards, unless they are blue chip guys are usually day 2 or day 3 picks.

Bills need to draft BPA with some judgement towards positional need.

Loosing Edmunds opened up a hole in the defense...so now a top 3 pick will be allocated to plugging that hole.  I like Jack Cambell but not at 27...I think that is a reach.  As I have been saying all along...if Robinson is there he should be the pick....if not O'Cyrus might be an option at guard.  Else trade down to grab Cambell at LB and use the 2nd round pick on a Center to eventually replace Morris.

I honestly thought Beane would finally invest draft picks on the o-line this year but it looks like he is going back to his old ways of signing middle of the road veteran free agents.

If the veteran performs it is a successful approach but we haven't been that lucky lately.

Hopefully we have better luck with this batch of linemen. He obviously likes his o-line already seasoned.

David Edwards is on a one year contract.   Ryan Bates' contract has a trap door in it after this year, and I think we all agree Mitch Morse could retire after this year.

Ike Boettger is also on a one year contract as well.

So in theory we could lose David Edwards, Mitch Morse, Ike Boettger and Ryan Bates after this year  (hopefully they play well, and we can sign some back)

We SHOULD draft an IOL this year.   I wanted one in the 2nd, but starting to feel 3rd round is the value Beane would put on an IOL.

Bates is back to playing the spot I wanted him playing last year. #1 bench warmer. Top guy off the bench. Now let’s draft a Tackle and move Spencer Brown to #2 bench warmer.

Calls me an idiot and then reiterates exactly what I said "

I guess you have a pretty low IQ

Ha, ha.  People don't remember Beaner moved UP in the draft to get Cody Ford.

And not all picks work, so i think we need to take another day 1/2 crack at a OL - maybe pass blocking center/Guard or RT

So shines a good deed in a weary world."

Exactly, every pick doesn't work out.   So you have to keep taking swings.
See my signature, I want Beane to draft Oline.   I prefer going IOL/Center in the 2nd round.   Get a good prospect.  Don't try to get cute and hope you get lucky in the 5th round.

Will Beane take a RT in the 1st round this year?  I really doubt it.   I think Beane is going to roll with Spencer Brown, not because Spencer is so great, but because Beane wants to use the 1st round pick and probably the 2nd round pick on other positions, so he is forced to cross his fingers and hope Spencer can get be at least a little better this year (and maybe...but when you stink at Pass Pro, it is harder to fix than if you are not a good run blocker)
