Beane Press Conference Thursday, March 16th, 2023

Recommended Posts

Overall he emphasized the Cap this year and next year is constraining him running out and signing big FAs.

He is going to keep looking at ways to find guys that fit, and come with a number that fits under the Bills Cap.

He pointed out some other teams may still cut players ("Cap Casualties") that he could have interest in.

HOT ITEM: Going to keep LB Matt Milano at his current position.   Instead, need to find a MLBer, but that guy may be already on the roster.
Mentioned Tyrel Dodson, Terrel Bernard and Spector will compete.

Thinks they have about $9 million of Cap left.   But he made it clear he can not use all of that.  So, there isn't a lot left to spend.

When asked about McKenzie, "not sure what they are going to do with him....but we can't have duplicates".

Damar had a great visit with Beane recently.  Back home right now.   Damar told him he wants to play again.  Has another medical visit in April.
Things are trending in the right direction, for now.

HOT ITEM:  Will try to add a bigger back for depth, at some point, didn't sound like it was a priority.

Keeping Conor McGovern on the left side, for now.

Christian Benford.   No decision on his position.   Open to either corner or safety.  Depends on other players and how OTAs and training camp goes.

Spencer Brown.  "First, very confident in Spencer, thinks he is trending up.  Back surgery set him back.  With that said, Beane will add competition to RT.....free agency, draft, not sure"

OBJ.  Our scout watched his workout.  We will always take a look.  Monitoring the situation.

Defensive Coordinator.  No plans to bring anyone in from the outside.   Not naming a defensive play caller at this point.

Beane doesn't have the money.

You don't have to have Aced linear algebra or calculus to know the Cap is real.  You can't move contracts around forever and magically keep creating money.    Beane is worried about the Cap next year too.   He mentioned he doesn't want to have to start cutting key players because he is over the Cap next year.

Not impossible, but I think Wagner is too expensive.   Beane is looking for Pabst Blue Ribbon right now, not Heineken.

FYI on the Cap.

Right now Beane thinks he has about $9 million or so in Cap Space.

But he needs to set aside $3.5 million for practice squad players come the end of August.

Also, he wants to hold $4-$5 million for "in season" replacement costs during the season.
(For example if you lose someone to injury, and have to go out and bring a guy in, you have to count both against your Cap)

Sorry folks, we are shopping at Walmart this year (unless some incredible, impossible to pass up deal comes along)

Other than getting Allen this will be his most important draft ever. He has to hit on at least 3 out of 6 picks imo. All future starters. I think it’s Robinson or Campbell in round 1.

On side note McKenize is gone.

Well, he's paying a 5'6" WR coming off an injury and has not proven anything in his few years in the league, like he's a big time FA

If Beane cuts Harty loose after this season, the dead cap hit is only $1.3 million.

So, it is pretty much a one year trial.
If he plays well, and they keep him for 2024, the CASH payments to him in 2024 are $3.9 million.  Not crazy amount.

Looks to me like the top 3 picks will be LB, an offensive playmaker (wr/te/rb) and o-line.

Disagree…he clearly mentioned he thinks the LB is already here. To me, RT will likely be the first pick. He clearly mentioned the draft in regards to competition.

He did spend a lot of time talking up Spencer Brown.  So Beane could pass on a RT in the 1st.

He will probably draft a DE/Edge guy   LOL

“But we can’t have duplicates”.  I take it we won’t be going after any slot guys in the draft.  Whichever WR we do take better be able to play outside.

I haven’t looked at the bigger WRs in the draft, but Cedric Tillman and Michael Wilson are 2 that are 6’2”-ish.

I believe those two should be available in the third round, leaving LB and OL for rounds 1 & 2.

I do hope Beane is willing to take an OLineman early.

I get it if he wants to wait until the 2nd round though....

But there should be one of the following available:

Joe Tippmann, Cody Mauch, Steve Avila or John Michael Schmitz   (everyone has played center at some point).

Train them at guard as rookies, but know they could play center in 2024 if needed.

If Beane could really solidify the interior of the Offensive Line with a 2nd round pick this year, it would be awesome.  That player could be here for the next 7-8 years protecting Josh, and offering stability.

And if either Conor McGovern, Ike Boettger and/or Ryan Bates improves a little bit more, and stays for the next 3-4 years, more stability.
