I guess West Virginia is okay with trans people getting married to children. You would think if they were so afraid of Trans people grooming their kids they would make sure the law doesn't allow Trans people to marry children. hmmmm...

Child marriage ban bill defeated in West Virginia House - ABC News (go.com)

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A bill that would have prohibited minors from getting married in West Virginia was defeated Wednesday night in a legislative committee.

The Republican-dominated Senate Judiciary Committee rejected the bill on a 9-8 vote, a week after it passed the House of Delegates.

The vote came shortly after the bill's main sponsor, Democratic Del. Kayla Young of Kanawha County, testified briefly before the committee. She said that since 2000 there have been more than 3,600 marriages in the state involving one or more children.

Currently, children can marry as young as 16 in West Virginia with parental consent. Anyone younger than that also must get a judge’s waiver.

“For now, there will be no floor for the age of marriage in WV, endangering our kids,” Young wrote on Twitter after the vote.

In a rebuke, Cabell County Democratic Sen. Mike Woelfel reminded the committee after the vote that Wednesday was International Women’s Day.

Some of the bill's opponents have argued that teenage marriages are a part of life in West Virginia.

Kanawha County Republican Sen. Mike Stuart, a former federal prosecutor who sided with the majority, said his vote “wasn’t a vote against women.” He said his mother was married when she was 16, and “six months later, I came along. I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”

The bill would have established that 18 is the age of consent and removed the ability of a minor to obtain consent through their parents, legal guardians, or by court petition. Existing legal marriages, including those done in other states, would have been unaffected.

According to the nonprofit group Unchained At Last, which seeks to end forced and child marriage, seven states have set the minimum age for marriage at 18, all since 2018. Supporters of such legislation say it reduces domestic violence, unwanted pregnancies and improves the lives of teens.

Although recent figures are unavailable, according to the Pew Research Center, West Virginia had the highest rate of child marriages among the states in 2014, when the state's five-year average was 7.1 marriages for every 1,000 children ages 15 to 17.

nothing in the link or most likely in the bill mentions anything about trans. There's already  a thread thats saved for trans and yet you found a way to make a bill about trans. Just like the florida bill not allowing schools to sexualize children is all of a sudden "dont say gay" bill.

What's f8eak going to come up with tomorrow to make himself feel oppressed and offended  , tomorrow.

The bill that was defeated would have prevented child marriages across the board. Are you worried about trans people around your children or not? Without this bill, trans people can legally groom and get married to children. Is that what you want or nah?

No.

The bill would have prevented child marriages. Without the bill, trans people can legally marry the children you think they are grooming.

It seems as though if the GOP really wanted to prevent trans people from marrying children, they would have supported the bill.

Why do you think the GOP would not want to vote for a bill that would prevent child marriage?

You're making it look like republicans are pushing for trans to marry kids.

Are kids 16 and up  required to have a parents consent?

Why are you making this about trans? You're attempting to make it  about repubs vs. trans (you)

Do you want to live in a society that allows children to be married to trans people, yes or no?

Oh, so are you saying as long as the child has permission from their parents, they should be allowed to marry a trans person?

what are you talking about? Why can't you answer?

Should a trans person be able to marry a 9-year-old with permission from the child's parents?

YES or NO?

NO. I havent heard of parents allowing their 9 year old to marry.  You're making up a radical scenario to make a point. So stupid.

At what age would it become appropriate to let your child get married?

As the article points out, you can get married younger than 16 if you have a waiver from a judge.

So should a Trans woman be able to legally marry a 15-year-old?

Because without this bill, thats what can happen.

As a parent 18 I prefer at least 18? But legally ,it's up to the individual states .

So to be clear, you would think it's bad if there's one political party that very consistently opposes bans on child marriage?

Because without this bill, thats what can happen.

So a child needs special permission from a judge to do so. He/she can't just get married as easily as puberty blockers.

How old is the trans in you scenario?

Do you think its morally wrong for other states to allow children under 18 to be married?

States can make up any legislation they want if it is the wish of the people. If I don't like it I move.

I'm asking you what you believe. Should a 50-year-old trans person be legally able to marry a 15-year-old just because the parents say its okay and they have a waiver form a judge?

Pointless govt crap.

You need a bill for pro or con?

Here's how life works. Kid can't get married because parent won't let it happen. Doesn't matter whether govt allowed it.

It's as dumb as needing to make a adult marriage legal. Marriage license etc.
