Attorney General Merrick B. Garland Delivers Remarks on Civil Rights Violations by the Louisville Metro Police Department and Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government
Louisville, KY

Remarks as Delivered

Good morning, everyone.

On April 26, 2021, I announced that the Justice Department had opened a civil investigation into the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government and the Louisville Metro Police Department. Our investigation sought to determine whether those entities engage in a pattern or practice of violations of the Constitution or federal law.

I am here today to announce the findings of that investigation. I am also announcing that the Justice Department, Louisville Metro, and LMPD have agreed in principle to negotiate toward a consent decree....

Specifically, the report finds that LMPD:

  • Uses excessive force, including unjustified neck restraints and the unreasonable use of police dogs and tasers;
  • Conducts searches based on invalid warrants;
  • Unlawfully executes warrants without knocking and announcing;
  • Unlawfully stops, searches, detains, and arrests people;
  • Unlawfully discriminates against Black people in enforcement activities;
  • Violates the rights of people engaged in protected speech critical of policing;
  • And, along with Louisville Metro, discriminates against people with behavioral health disabilities when responding to them in crisis....

Some officers have demonstrated disrespect for the people they are sworn to protect. Some have videotaped themselves throwing drinks at pedestrians from their cars; insulted people with disabilities; and called Black people “monkeys,” “animal,” and “boy.”

This conduct is unacceptable. It is heartbreaking. It erodes the community trust necessary for effective policing. And it is an affront to the vast majority of  officers who put their lives on the line every day to serve Louisville with honor.

And it is an affront to the people of Louisville, who deserve better...

Some of that is correct and some of it dumb and some of it is sentence fragments that we'd have to get the context for to say which of those categories it falls into.

Yeah but it's all hate no matter how you try to qualify it.

No it isn't.  When Don Lemon says white men are the most dangerous in one of the first clips, he's citing FBI terror statistics.

I haven't clicked the link yet, but if they're saying that like....stats show most drivers are white but that the residents in the most heavily car-polluted areas are POC then I don't see how you could have an issue with that message.

And now that I'm reading it, that sounds like almost exactly what they're saying.

We know that highway/byways are run through poor neighborhoods many times because they don’t have any wherewithal to fight it.

but if most of the people that drive those roads are more affluent white people, they shouldn’t be demonized for that.

but, besides this article, the “finding ways to hate whitey” people are getting more and more annoying.

you are afraid of backlash, but shit like this can’t help. Do you disagree?

I didn't think the article was demonizing anyone.  It was written from the POV of an overzealous white dude with a guilty conscience, but as far as I know nobody asked him to feel that way.

As more people wake up to the history of systemic racism in the US, more of those people will try too hard to atone for their white privilege.  I acknowledge this.  But that doesn't mean anyone whose understanding of these issues is on the more sophisticated/academic side is telling those people they ought to be atoning for it.

That's a liberal mindset, not a leftist one.  Leftists understand that the problem (and thus the solution) lies with systems, not individuals.  Liberals tend to be more individualistic with their bullcrap.  That's how we get dumb shit like Robin DeAngelo and "White Fragility".

It's not that I disagree, it's that I think it's misplaced grievance-farming.  There are 320 million people in the US.  Anyone who wants to curate their social media diet to find random anonymous assholes saying "fuck whitey" can do so FAR more easily than a dedicated group of the good kind of woke people can reach out to those random anonymous assholes and start a dialogue.

How about THIS one?

Researchers Claim Systemic Racism Is Now Impacting Wildlife

The study claimed that non-white neighborhoods — unlike white majority ones — are near highways, railroads or other impediments to animal-friendly environments.

“Systemic racism alters the demography of urban wildlife populations in ways that generally limit population sizes and negatively affect their chances of persistence,” the study said.

“Residential segregation creates race-based disparities in natural resource availability, land use, pollution, and habitat connectivity, such that neighborhoods that historically excluded minorities tend to be better wildlife habitat,” the study said.

The study said that suburbs and other neighborhoods populated by whites had more genetic diversity in animals than inner city areas. Greater diversity in species, the study said, as well as the size of the species represented, were good measures of the viability of animal populations.

In short, squirrels and other animals found it harder to survive in a non-white neighborhood than in a white-majority one, according to the study.

Now even squirrels are white supremacists! LOL

That's because poorer people live in areas with more air pollution.

Clearly the answer is $1 million Universal Basic Income.

Get everyone moving to the 'burbs.

The solution is a massive investment in green technology and public transit.
