Spike's 2023 Mock Draft -- March 8th, 2023

We have to chose.    We need a good quality Left Guard and a good quality Right Guard, and a better RT.

We only have a handful of draft picks.

We have only some IOUs to spend in Free Agency.

McDermott doesn't like to start rookies.

So, moving Bates to LG, drafting a RG, and signing a veteran RT is the most I see happening (even if I want more, I know I won't get it)

SO YOU AGREE THAT GIVING BATES THAT CONTRACT LAST OFF-SEASON WAS A MISTAKE?

The choice was give Bates that contract, or, sign Bobby Hart's worse brother.

Beane apparently couldn't find any decent veteran OLines to sign.

My favorite draft class is 2009.  Flier on Maybin aside, they nailed it and damn do they need to nail it again this year…

Eric Wood
Jarius Byrd
Andre Levitre

That is what we need now.   3 good good players out of one draft class.     That is the definition of an "A" draft class.

Just the mention of that word — Maybin — gives me flashbacks of horror and triggers me to self-medicate with alcohol and recreational drugs.

Needle Dick Daryls and Me Amigo Victor have NOT weighed in on my mock draft.

Should I be offended or just assume that the power of my logic here has rendered them both speechless?

Daryls commented but my Amigo hasn't.

I hope he does NOT fall in that category of Bills fans who think that OL are just fat guys unworthy of drafting early.

I think round 1 it is going to be Robinson, a top 5 WR that drops to 27, the TE Meyers from Nortre Dame or O'Cyrus the guard from Florida.  All depends on which one drops.

I believe if the Bills go skill position at 27 like RB/WR/TE that the 2nd round pick will be the best interior linemen they can get in the second round.  I think the Bills may dip into O line twice in this draft, but I am pretty certain they would not draft 3 OL in one year.

Even with just a LG the O line would be greatly improved.

Personally, I would love to draft Robinson, which would allow the Bills to cut Hines and save 4 million.  Then draft a guard in the second who can start at LG to replace Saffold.

When you design a team to make a run for the Championship, the RB is the last piece to be added.  They have the shortest shelf life so you add them last.  Yes the Bills need O linemen as well....but at pick 27 you are not drafting a blue chip LT.  Usually you find starting Guards in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.   There are a few guards worthy of taking in round 1, most elite linemen play either C or LT....RT is for the LT that is not quite as mobile to play against speed rushers.

Robinson, is an elite back that can do it all.  I doubt he will drop to 27, but if there he would be the ideal pick.   Not just because he can carry the brick, but because he is an elite back that can catch coming out of the back field.

Robinson would just be running into the backside of our Offensive Line men because a below average NFL OL will simply NOT make running/rushing holes between the Tackles against more athletic and more powerful DTs of today's NFL.

In fact, with our current OL, Robinson would be met in the backfield on more than 25% of time that he is handed the ball.

If the plan is to run outside Tackles, Hines and our 2nd round pick from last year James Cook can do that.

Yet, after drafting a RB in the 2nd round last year, your hate for all things Offensive Line has you bitching this year to draft a RB in the 1st round.

The definition of insanity you must be familiar with since you were NO doubt diagnosed as such long ago.

I can’t adjust my mock draft to reflect the free agency signings the Bills made since they have thus far been pretty insignificant.

If the Bills do NOT sign FA Bobby Wagner, then I will need to change my 2nd or 3rd round from an IOL to a MLB.

With the Poyer re-signing, I do NOT expect the Bills to draft a Safety in the first 3 rounds.

This RB talk is foolish given the Bills used a 2nd round pick on Cook last year.
