Reminder on Comp Picks and how they are awarded

For example, losing Jaquan Johnson might not count.  His new salary might be too low.  So he gets tossed from the equation.

In fact, we don't know if Devin Singletary counts.  His contract details have not been released yet.  Need to know his BASE Salary.

We do know Kyle Allen does NOT count against us because his 2023 salary is only $1.23 million.

It was announced he could earn UP TO $3.75 million.    With incentives.

We are still waiting to see what his annual salary is for 2023.   I hope it is $3 million +.

Color me incredibly perplexed as to why people care about comp picks. 

 

Have we ever found a player that really helped us with a comp?

 

I doubt teams plan around getting them.

How about we sign a lot of good players, then when we make roster cuts we trade the guy instead and get picks for the trade, Boom Comp picks.  Tell me does Beane do this?  That was a rhetorical question, he does and that  is why he doesn’t care about comp picks.

Baltimore does.   For example, they would have let Jordan Poyer sign with another team, and use the Comp Pick(s) they got to draft a safety.   The Ravens last year had a 3rd round Comp Pick, and two 4th round Comp Picks.    They had 10 picks. 

It can help.  An extra 3rd, and two extra 4ths, helps to fill out the roster with cheap labor, or you can use to trade in the draft. 

FYI that 3rd round Comp Pick Baltimore packaged with WR Marquise Brown to get Arizona's FIRST round pick. 
The first 4th round Comp Pick they used to draft TE Isaiah Likely, who had a good rookie year.  36 receptions. 
The second 4th round Comp Pick they used to draft CB Damarion Williams, who was a depth corner for them.

and you are not thinking properly about draft picks. The whole draft is a crap shoot like throwing darts on a dart board a long ways away. Many more misses then hits.

By adding comp picks you are adding to your pool of picks so you have a much better chance at hitting a few more than normal. Like buying an extra raffle ticket it just increases your odds. Does not matter at what point on the raffle ticket roll you bought the tickets.

 

and Singletary and Jaquan Johnson contracts are not CFA eligible contracts, likely due to base salary too low, so Bills right now stand at 2-2 and not eligible for comps coming.

Of course having more picks helps. You have ammo to move up the board and/or more chances to hit on a good one. 

 

But I don't think any GM goes about their day to day and roster filling strategies thinking about getting comp picks. If you get them great. But that's about it IMO

Brandon Beane certainly doesn't.  He just focuses on what he can do now in terms getting guys in.

In the long run though, you will have fewer picks, and fewer chances to get lucky.

Plus, he doesn't mind trading away picks.  He traded away a 4th last year to move up 2 spots to draft Kaiir Elam.
He traded away two 4th round picks, to move up to get Dawson Knox.   And so on. 
He traded away a pick to get Dean Marlowe in October, who is now on the street, and traded away a 5th to get Nyheim Hines. 
Not the end of the world, but over a 5+ year period, having few picks shows up in your roster as you had fewer chances to get lucky.

So do the Eagles. Year in and year out Philly always gets them. The year we lost Gilmore we were in line for a 3rd round pick. We lost that pick by signing a bunch of backups. All we had to is sign one less than we lost. If I was the GM and we had lost 5 players and we are about to sign our 5th player it would factor into my decision. Would I trade a 3rd for this player? Because, basically that’s what I’m doing. Victor asking do compensatory picks ever amount to anything, is like asking do 3rd round picks ever pan out?

i agree 100% but keep in mind it is really 4th round picks as they are added to the end of the 3rd round officially. Pushing all 4th rounders later. But still valuable as they are essentially first picks in 4th round.

Right now, for this cycle, the Eagles are in line to get a TON of comp picks.
I think the max they will get is 4, but Josh Dang it, they could be getting a 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th next year.

So right now they would get an extra 3rd, 5th, 5th, and another 5th.     Even if you throw darts, and you are bound to get some good rostered players.....considering they have their regular 7 picks as well.

Meanwhile, Devin Singletary's contract, due to the combination of a $2.75M base salary and a $375k Likely To Be Earned incentive, counts for $3.125M in the compensatory formula, comfortably qualifying him as a compensatory free agent in favor of Buffalo.

The Bills currently have gained only 2 FAs and lost 3 FAs for a formula total of -1.    We are down one.

If Beane signs no more Compensatory Qualified Free Agents, from now until April 30th, the Bills SHOULD* get a 3rd round comp pick next year. 

* The formula is calculated by the NFL next February/March.  Note Players you lost must stick with their signing teams.  And be on the roster.   For example, if Case Keenum gets cut in Pre-season, we didn't "lose" him per the formula.

lol. Singletary now counts but Edwards cancels it out. lol. Such is life for Bills.

I see now the site has Johnson and Crowder TBD......... so maybe their contracts will Q for CFA and help swing Bills back to get a comp. Let's hope.

also fyi: i never heard of this before. I wonder if this is the play for pay system like Hamlin and many received. Hamlin earned an extra 700k for playing so much last year and being overly productive over his draft slot.

interesting on Edwards rookie deal. CONTRACT:4 yr(s) / $2,784,520 total.

but due to him overplaying his 5th round value his 4th year salary bumped up to nearly 2.8 mill for the 4th year alone instead of the approx 800k per scheduled for rookie contact.

that is nice for players who pan out.

Information on David Edwards contract hasn't be released yet.
