US Nuclear Forces Chief Says ‘the Big One Is Coming’

The head of US Strategic Command called the war in Ukraine a 'warmup' for what is to come
by Dave DeCamp Posted onNovember 6, 2022

The commander that oversees US nuclear forces delivered an ominous warning at a naval conference last week by calling the war in Ukraine a “warmup” for the “big one” that is to come.

“This Ukraine crisis that we’re in right now, this is just the warmup,” said Navy Adm. Charles Richard, the commander of US Strategic command. “The big one is coming. And it isn’t going to be very long before we’re going to get tested in ways that we haven’t been tested [in] a long time.”

Richard’s warning came after the US released its new Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), which reaffirms that the US doctrine allows for the first use of nuclear weapons. The review says that the purpose of the US nuclear arsenal is to “deter strategic attacks, assure allies and partners, and achieve US objectives if deterrence fails.”

The NPR says the US “would only consider the use of nuclear weapons in extreme circumstances to defend the vital interests of the United States or its Allies or partners.”

The NPR was released with the 2022 National Defense Strategy that names China as the “most comprehensive and serious challenge” to the US and describes Russia as an “acute threat.” The document, as with the previous 2018 National Defense Strategy, makes clear that the US military is preparing for future conflicts with both China and Russia.

As the head of STRATCOM, Richard had previously warned that the risk of nuclear war with Russia and China is a “real possibility.” He said last year that the US military must “shift its principal assumption from ‘nuclear employment is not possible’ to ‘nuclear employment is a very real possibility,’ and act to meet and deter that reality.”

The Nuclear Posture Review calls for the modernization of the nuclear triad, which could cost up to $1.5 trillion, and keeping tensions high with Russia and China helps justify the massive price tag. Richard said last week that the US needs to put more resources into competing with China’s military.

Congress is looking to spend big on arming Taiwan, with a plan to give the island $10 billion in military aid included in the Senate’s version of the 2023 National Defense Authorization Act. While done in the name of deterrence, China’s actions and rhetoric make it clear that more US support for Taiwan will make war in the region more likely.

So can we go back to my thread where I divide up which 2B people die?

If you live north of the equator, you're pretty much fucked.  If I were you and shiva, I'd move to the Yukon or the Canadian rockies,  the mountains should minimjze blast waves and in the valleys, if you don't get forest fires or fallout you should be able to survive.  Here? Well, I'd say Montana or Idaho are our best bet for survival.

Are we going to have to  protect our Poutine neighbors like always?  Just use Trudaeu as a human shield.

Anything near the Rockies is too expensive.

A place like Jasper is a very expensive tourist town and it suffered from smoke from the wild wires in September.

Yukon is too close to Russia which I assume will be a smouldering pile of ashes.

He lives in the lowlands of Ontario.  The fallout and fires from the US eastern seaboard and upper midwest means he's fucked too

We could move to the Ottawa Valley and be worshipped by the locals as some sort of intellectual GODs.

Maybe not, there's nothing except a few reindeer herds and fisheries.  The mountains north of Kamchatka and east of Vladivostok should help.  The problem is how will the jet stream carry the fallout

Will the Jet Stream be altered permanently by the nukes?

What if it is geographically lowered severely and increases its intensity 10-fold?

Think of all the double wides that will be flipped in Florida NOT to mention how difficult seeing will be to all those Florida mullets?

The whole world is fked in the event of a nuclear war. I'm at a ground zero spot right now so it would be quick. Many people could survive especially S of the equator, still it would be a slow death for them as the sun is blotted out and crops cannot be grown and everyone starts starving to death. And the radiation will start killing people  little by little.

Only way I can see of surviving for a while would be to have some type of bomb shelter, and at least a years supply, preferably 5,  of food and water. Not sure what you could do to purify the air if you even could though.

t theorized that the detonation of nuclear warheads with a force of 5,000 megatons, equivalent to a blast of 5,000 million tons of TNT, would ignite so many fires in cities and forrests that smoke and soot would block out the sun for months on end, lowering temperatures by perhaps 75 degrees, first in the Northern ..

Russians are starting to build bomb shelters in their own homes as concerns about the potential use of nuclear weapons by President Vladimir Putin grow, according to local media reports.

The demand for personal bomb shelters is growing, according to Russian news outlet 66.RU, which cited construction companies that specialize in building bunkers in homes.

Cromwell, a construction company based in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, said it saw a rise in requests notably after Putin announced a partial mobilization order on September 21.

Here's the thing, and its very chilling, they have a far more extensive nuclear survival plan than we do.  They used to practice evacuating Moscow and Petersburg yearly.  They also still have massive bombshelters under the Urals and as seen in the ongoing tragedy in Ukraine, schools, hospitals, and metro stations were designed specifically to be bomb shelters in case of war.  Yeah, the mentality behind Cold War One in both West and East was insane.  That we did not take up Yeltsin on the offer to get rid of these things in the early 90s is criminal.

Yeah, no amount of idione, radiation pills, water, and foodstuffs is going to save life in the northern hemisphere.  I may not be on ground zero (but fuck, they make nuclear bomb parts 10 miles to my southeast; downtown has the IRS [a legitimate target in war]; we have Ft Riley 90 minutes west; the army war college is 45 minutes west; our B-2s are stationed 60 minutes east; and due to Kansas City's central location we probably get an EMP too.  My love of Russian history and culture is only half the equation.  I also have a vested interest, my life, in seeing that this thing deescalates and is handled diplomatically because I have a better chance of a threesome with Sheila and Keisha Ortega than I do of surviving a nuclear war.

The global south has a much better chance of surviving, at least initially, but fallout and starvation due to lack of fertilizers and foodstuffs means suffering there too.  Damn, I wish all parties in this thing would see how fucking dangerous this situation truly is.

Every day.  What else can we do? I can only email our leaders and those of our partners and rivals, but all I get are canned spam back.  Who besides the almighty and the saints and mother Mary is there to listen?
