Biden threatens new tax to end ‘war profiteering’

Record oil industry profits are 'hard to believe,' the US president has said

US President Joe Biden has vowed to impose new taxes to restrain the “excess profits” of American oil companies, insisting they must help lower prices for consumers, while accusing them of reaping undue benefits from the conflict in Ukraine.

The president took the oil industry to task during an address on Monday, speaking alongside Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Treasury head Janet Yellen. He argued that companies have seen “profits so high it’s hard to believe” since fighting erupted in Eastern Europe earlier this year, and must start acting beyond their “narrow self-interest.”

“Oil companies’ record profits today are not because they’re doing something new or innovative. Their profits are a windfall of war – the windfall from the brutal conflict that’s ravaging Ukraine and hurting tens of millions of people around the globe,” he said, adding that they have “a responsibility to act in the interest of their consumers, their community, and their country.”

The president went on to note the significant earnings reported this year by oil giants like Shell and Exxon, with the former company recently announcing $9.5 billion in profit for the third quarter of 2022, almost doubling what it made during the same period last year. Exxon, meanwhile, said it brought in $18.7 billion in profits the last quarter, “nearly triple what Exxon made last year and the most in its 152-year history,” Biden said. “It’s never made that much profit.”

Biden isn’t a “Warhawk” 50 year politician, and Pelosi(s) are the victims. Seems very, very coincidental timing 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️!

Counterpoint: it isn't a coincidence that Paul Pelosi was attacked in his home after a slew of rallies by Marjorie Taylor Greene where she calls Nancy a traitor and reminds everyone that the penalty for treason is death.

LOL. You are a joke.  What WAS REALLY GOING ON in that Pelosi household while nasty Nancy was out of town?  God knows.  LOL

What I don't understand is how you can diagnose this correctly and somehow not blame the corporation passing it down.  Why is this a dig against Joe Biden and not a dig against Exxon/Mobil?

Because that's how you interpreted it.  :niterider:

And also how you meant it, but I appreciate you tacitly acknowledging that your only hope to not get exposed as completely full of shit is to pretend that wasn't obvious.

No.  I'm a reader.  Words mean things, and when they're put together those put-togethers are called 'sentences' and they mean things too.  The ability to successfully discern the meanings of sentences is called 'literacy'.  When you become especially skilled at literacy you unlock new difficulty modes such as one known as 'subtext'.

I assumed I was speaking to a high school graduate, so in a way this one's on me.

Well you assume too much.  You're going to put yourself behind the eight ball if you continue with that way of thinking.  :niterider:

They should repeal the 40 Billion Dollar Tax Cut they gave the oil companies, since their combined profits equals 40 Billion

Do you agree or disagree with a windfall tax on oil companies?

Do you think price gouging is defensible?

OK I'll try again..

Do you agree or disagree with a windfall tax on oil companies, yes or no?

Why is a windfall tax the only option?

Why not start with making a request to the oil companies to lower their prices at the pumps  voluntarily until their profits drop to acceptable levels?

The companies could do it easily and no money would be wasted on an unnecessary bureaucracy.

"Why can't we just ask the corporations to CHOOSE to make less money?" is a question no leftist would ever ask another leftist, so thanks for this clear-as-day evidence that you are not a leftist.

To answer the question, though, since you obviously don't know the first fucking thing about capitalism: any oil company that did that would immediately fire its CEO for failing his fiduciary obligation to the bottom line.

Yea as fellow leftists we prefer that the government would just get on its knees and beg the capitalist class to just lower prices after its already exploited the American people out of billions of dollars. That seems like a solid plan. Jimmy Dore must be the mastermind behind that one.
