Benford continues an upward trajectory

Seemingly out of nowhere, rookie cornerback Christian Benford, a sixth-round pick, has worked himself into an interesting conversation midway through camp. At one point in the offseason, Benford was a bubble player and potential practice squad player, but since then he has played well enough to earn more opportunities.

Once again on Tuesday, Benford was working in during team drills against Allen and receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis. Benford, first-round pick Kaiir Elam and Dane Jackson all took their turns working against the talented passing offense. Benford rewarded the Bills for those chances by staying in Diggs’ hip pocket on one route toward the back of the end zone and put himself in perfect position to break up a potential touchdown pass. Diggs got the better of Benford on some one-on-one drills, but Benford has definitely shown some natural ability.

There’s much to like about Benford in the Bills’ defensive scheme. At 6-foot-1, 205 pounds he has the size and length they usually look for, along with some plus athleticism and strength. He also plays with excellent poise, analyzing the route as it’s coming at him and reading the receiver’s body language quite well. Especially considering some of Elam’s struggles, Benford’s ability is not going unnoticed.

It’s best not to go overboard about what Benford could be, considering it’s only been a couple of days with an enhanced opportunity. But he has passed a good early test. Now the Bills have to see how he’ll do in a game setting against another team to determine if he can be a dependable depth player this season. If he shows that ability, they could be on to something. If not, this may just be a temporary upswing for a young player before the usual lulls of a rookie season come into play. Either way, keep an eye on No. 47 during camp. He has, at least so far, exceeded expectations.

Reports say Elam looks like he’s ‘trying too hard’. Welp.

For the 627th time…for all the fuckers in the back…I’ve said for years…our best players on defense…with the exception of Tre White…have been free agent pick ups(Hyde, Miller, Poyer) trades(Jerry Hughes)and low round draft picks(Milano, Taron Johnson). I believe the system makes average players good to great. Stop fucking blowing first rounders…even fucking second rounders…on defense. Oliver is on the verge of joining White so we’ll see. But Edmunds? Epenesa? Basham? Rousseau we’ll see…but the dude fell off the map after the chiefs game.

1st rounders should always be used to help your franchise qb. 5 years with Allen now and not a single first round pick made to help him. Lord fuck a duck!

Beane traded a 1st rounder & other picks for Diggs, so there was a 1st round pick used to help Josh Allen.

So players that can close the gap on that 13 seconds isn't helping the QB?

Sean still doesnt understand football. Thinks where a player is drafted actually matters when what actually matters is can they play or not. The best teams are built with mid round picks and key FA's.

If we had a present ownership, he would have been fired that week.

Paul Hamilton is on record of saying that the only way the Bills are ever winning a championship….AFC or NFL is if the bills win big…and I agree 100%. He doesn’t think McDermott has what it takes to win those close games in big moments. It’s what got marty schottenheimer fired. Blowing big games.

13 seconds is and was 100% coaching…aka McDermott.

So you didnt see the match up nightmare of having undrafted CB and 7th round CB going against cheetah? 4.6-4.7 guys tying to run with the fastest guy in the league. Do I really have to spell out to you why the Chiefs had the Bills number the last two years. That's 100% the reason the Bills were sent home and Cheetah is talking shit in Miami.

Dont you know that's why we weren't able to play our regular defense at the end of the game because we were terrified of that speed? I already know what you will say but no offense can keep up with that. Cheetah is one and only one. You ain't gonna find that in the draft.

Hence why I said you don’t draft DB in the first round. So you’re thinking the Bills were doomed no matter what? Chiefs would have scored with 13 seconds left regardless of opponent? Interesting.

A team that has taken a lead with 16 seconds or less left in the game have only lost twice in the history of the game. It was 13 seconds, and the other???? The MCM. Both Bills disasters.

Point is, McDermott could have put you and I back there and the Bills should still NEVER lose the last game they played.

Beans ability to hit on mid/low round picks is what has built bills into a yearly contender for the Bowl. These picks cost less and give huge cap flexibility.

Tre White was in the 1st Round and we would have won a SB if he wasn't injured so I fail to see your point

Not gonna say there wasn't fault there. But the number 1 defense was abused all game. And that probably went into the decision to play deep off coverage. Why? We didn't have the speed nor athleticism to match. That doesn't exactly distill confidence in the coaching staff now does it?

Now if he could pick just one decent 2nd rounder.

With all that said, the Bills still won the game, but the coaching staff fucked up. I will give the coaching staff a pass because this franchise was shit before they got here. But what happened in the last game can NEVER be allowed again.
