Time to create a separate forum for politics. I'm just tired of all the bullshit.

Let’s try to say this in third grade terms. People click on the tags they wanna hide or see, in the forum isn’t hiding the topics they don’t want to see. Hopefully this explains it in a way that even a car salesman could understand

Ok, so here is the problem. People are not tagging properly.

The system and code is perfectly fine.

It’s the human posters that are not tagging their political posts as political. Or their Bills posts as Bills. Or their Sabres posts as Sabres.

No amount of “fixing” the system will fix the human beings using the system.

There is nothing wrong with the tagging system itself.

heres a possibility:

when i click on one of the categories it doesnt change color or anything to indicate that it is 'on' or 'off'

intuitively, you could think that clicking on politics first would bring you only politics. then if you clicked on bills it would be reasonable to think that it would only bring you bills.

but i just discovered thats not the case. i had to click politics a second time to shut off politics and the only thing that remained is bills threads

its been so long that i cant remember if i tried this before or not, but as of right now the buttons appear to work as a toggle and DO NOT cancel out previous selections. so to the user it could look like its not working when it actually is, but youre just using it wrong

it would be helpful if the buttons turned color when on/off to easily tell what was active. maybe the default should be grey (the universal 'off' color) and when you toggle a topic it turns red. the blue color i see seems too close to grey that it may not get picked up by all users. you need the colors to have a stark contrast, which is why i picked red/grey

idk if this is going to hold up but i will keep trying and report back if anything changes

they just dont filter properly. it is impossible for me to set it to see only one category, for example

i tried closing the browser, clearing cookies and cache, etc, and rebooting. that didnt change anything

They are filtering properly. People are just mistagging threads.

For example, putting a tag of “Bills” on Political threads.

i thought the tagging was forced?

That’s correct.

You can click on multiple tags to enable multiple categories.

Im going to update the system to show which tags are enabled.

if possible, and if not enabled already, this should be something changeable by staff

No, here is the problem. The tagging system is dumb. Why should anyone have to make extra clicks to NOT see some things? And like Meat said, since the beginning, it doesn't always work. Never on any other forum that I've ever been on, have I seen this tagging thing. Not one, ever. Stop being stubborn and just make the freaking forum. In the time this argument has and will go on, a new forum for politics could have been done

sorry, i disagree

i thought the tagging idea was brilliant by Lit. it kept all threads on the front page when you entered the site. then with just a click or two you could get the content you wanted

trust me, if we just make a politics forum it will be five hyper-partisan guys in constant war with each other. no middle ground will exist at all. with all subjects on the front page, you will pique some non-partisans interest and they will participate, creating the middle ground you need to have any constructive dialog at all

i would completely stop visiting the politics forum if it was just a separate forum. you guys love to argue with zero resolution or alternative views. i hate that. so again, five guys in constant war with nothing productive coming out of it is what you would end up with

Well, it's frustrating when you're dealing the mentality of "I know you are, but what am I" from the right.

The tagging system always works.

It has never not worked (at least after the original tweaks).

People just aren’t tagging properly.

I don’t even know why Hip cares.

He already said he’s blocked half the forums posters anyway.

I think people of many types have anger, fear, and frustration over the outbreak, and/or the reaction to it, and unfortunately some are letting it get channeled toward others who weren't responsible for it.  And/or maybe some folks were just looking for others/things to rage at even before this.   I don't know.

I try to catch myself if I'm contributing to that, but sometimes it's after the 1 hour mark and I can't edit anymore(maybe leaving the posts of people when they're riled is the goal to get more action/longer stays on here similar to casino tactics of no windows/clocks/etc, and that's why it's not changed or even replied to the many times I've asked?).  I'm not trying to make demands or be insulting like the other fellow, just trying to be persistent until I at least get a response to something Meat himself said was a good idea.

OK Maverick. You go be the only guy with the forum that uses tags Instead of separate and distinctive sections

Do you know what would allow a separate politics forum to thrive? If some shit got policed around here.

I didn’t just show up here three years ago telling people to fuck off. You’re the one that let this place get out-of-control long before I showed up. But you’re not gonna get me to settle down when you’ve got like, Bowman, and others, trolling his ass off, and the personal attacks were going on here long before I showed up. I just joined in on the game that was already being played.

I post on other message boards that have political sections where left and right are very divided but there are rules in place. Like no personal attacks. No trolling. No spreading fake information. But you allow all three to be encouraged here. Because you’re some kind of a twisted motherfucker that loves this shit.

it boggles my mind that somebody who pays money to own a message board would allow that shit to go on day in and day out, KNOWING It drives people away and lowers the amount of traffic that you get. You should be making money off of this site, not blowing it.

But hey, ya got tags!

Not a reply to TWD, who just beat me to the post:   Maybe exchange the "y" with an "i".  Oddy, those demands were the same common decency I was requesting from him.  An irony meter is warranted as well, lol.

That said, I agree with the personal attack stuff.  Maybe now that the main perpetrator of it has spoken against his own behavior, people will agree that it might be wise to limit it as I noted the site owner, "Admin" used to.

That’s what makes this a special forum.

There are a million other cookie-cutter forums with boring discussion.

This won’t be one of them.

No, that's what makes this a forum only populated by a handful of users. I'm not saying it should be Disney land, but it doesn't need to be Viet Nam, either, and trust me, I appreciate a forum where I can let some steam off, but whatever... all I know is that if you were really this "genius", this forum with no other competition at the level of the old BBMB should be raking it in and you could even create separate section for politics that is wide open, like now, but could only be accessed by requested permission of any users that wanted to talk politics - with the caveat that it's NC-17 rated at best!

Not sure if you noticed but I run 0 ads. I don’t want nor need the money.
