The Bills defense vs. Tom Brady: A thorough, schematic examination

What is the best way for Buffalo to limit Brady’s effectiveness in Week 8?

by Chris Trapasso Oct 27, 2016, 1:14p

Last year, the Bills lost twice to the Tom Brady-led Patriots. Both games were decided by one score.

In Week 2, Brady went nutso on Buffalo’s defense, torching it for 466 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions while completing 38 of 59 pass attempts.

#BuzzsGirlfriend.

In Week 11’s Monday Night Football clash, the Bills lost 20-13, but Brady wasn’t anywhere close to as productive or efficient. He went 20 of 39 — (51.2%) — for 277 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

I figured an outing with a completion percentage below 52% and fewer than two touchdowns is quite the rarity for Brady. Turns out, it is.

Starting at the beginning of 2011, it’s happened six times in the regular season. The Patriots’ are 2-4 in those games.

That entire article focused on stopping Brady.

Which is great.

Until Blount runs for 300 yards.

I'd much rather die a slow death via Blunt then sit back and watch Brady destroy the teams soul.

You have to have guys in throwing lanes and double Gronk.

Brady, Dareus, Hughes, Lawson and Zo have to win their one on one matchups and beat double teams.

Hardest team to defend in the league.

Need to win the turnover battle... Like 3-0. Also something nearly impossible vs the Pats.

I don't see anyway we win this game with Shady not at 100%.

Blount is no Aajei or whatever his name is. Blount not nearly as fast.

Plus NE will never abandon the passing game.

I think Miami's oline and Ajai are way better. That oline is healthy and Tunsil and Albert are beasts.

I don't see a blocked punt or Tate return setting up a score, so last week but i think the 3rd quarter kills us. Close at half time like 17 to 10 and then Brady puts up 21 in the 3rd.

You also have to get into Gronk's head and hit Brady.

Gronk's game is the pick/push off and you need to sell a few of these and get them called early in the game. When that happens, officials tend to look closer at his antics and Gronk has to start worrying about it and becomes less effective.

With Brady, he hates getting hit. Legally pop/chip him every chance. Maybe even drill him early and take the 15. Get in his head and let him know that today will not be a typical "free pass" clean jersey day. Show Brady that you're not afraid of him.

Uhm, what?

Blount is...

#1 in the league in rushing TD's

#3 in the league in attempts per game

#3 in the league in rushing 1st downs

#6 in the league in rushing (overall)

So yeah, Blount is not on the same level as Ajayi --- He's better.

Its gonna be a repeat of last year's game. Brady is gonna pass like our defense is made up 12 year olds. By the end of the game we'll put up a couple of garbage time scores to "powder" up the scoreboard and make it look close. It won't be. Not at all. Pwnage form the word go.

Don't know if I can pull myself up to watch this game. I think I might have to DVR it and then I can FF through if it gets out of hand. Either way, the volume is turned off this week. I won't be able to stomach the Patriot lovefest....

Again.

Better in nearly every ranking.

It's amazing how bad the average fan is at understanding player quality.

A guy has 2 good games and a fan thinks he's better than a guy who has been top 5 in several categories all year long.

Blount has 11 more yards on 60 more carries.

They had to lean heavily on Blount the first 4 weeks. He's a beast inside the 5 though.

Ajai is the better back, Blount has better numbers on sheer volume.

Gase had his head up his ass starting Foster and then using a committee.

How many games has he started compared to blount? You're not that stupid. He has almost same yds and half the attempts. You're right it is scary

Just read on another board that the Pats have NEVER been swept in the division in the Brady era. They also average wins by 28 points after dropping the 1st game.

Its gonna be a bloodbath dudes. Cover your eyes bad.

Yet the game opened at 4 points, and went back down to 5 from 6(update, back up to a massive 5.5 point differential, lol).

Maybe the Bills defense could learn from what the Ben-less Steelers did to keep it close the majority of the game, without their star QB? Did any of you actually watch that game?

7 for Blount and 6 for Ajayi.

Ajayi has had 2 good games.

He'll be coming back down to earth in 3, 2, 1...

Lol wow.

These are Ajayi's yards in every game in his career:

Game 1: 41 yards

Game 2: 48 yards

Game 3: 13 yards

Game 4: 6 yards

Game 5: 12 yards

Game 6: 15 yards

Game 7: 27 yards

Game 8: 23 yards

Game 9: 2 yards

Game 10: 14 yards

Game 11: 28 yards

Game 12: 23 yards

Game 13: 42 yards

Game 14: 204 yards

Game 15: 214 yards

Hmmm.

Which is these is unlike the others?

Damn people are stupid.

STATISTICAL OUTLIERS.

His last 2 games have skewed his overall numbers.

Prior to the last 2 games, he averaged 3.8 yards per carry in his CAREER.

Prior to the last 2 games, he averaged less than 3 yards per carry in 5 of his 15 career games (1/3rd!)

Prior to the last 2 games, he was on the roster bubble of being cut in training camp!

He is no where close to Blount yet.

The stupidity on this forum grows every day.

They had to lean heavily on Blount the first 4 weeks.

EXACTLY.

And other teams knew that.

DUH!

So they stacked the box and made Garoppolo and Brisset beat them.

It was tough sledding for Blount against 8 in the box.
