NFL informs teams that salary cap will be at least $180 million in 2021

Recommended Posts

NFL: New England Patriots at Buffalo Bills Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

On Thursday, the NFL sent a memo to the league stating that the team salary cap would be at least $180 million in 2021. Earlier during the pandemic negotiations, the league and NFLPA had agreed on a $175 million salary cap floor, so this is obviously good news for teams around the league.

The move isn’t just because 2020 revenues were better than expected. As the league looks ahead to projected attendance figures and how lockdown restrictions are loosening amid the vaccination rollout, they see increased revenues in 2021 in comparison to 2020.

In the memo, the NFL was clear that $180 wasn’t the exact salary cap figure, just that it wouldn’t be lower than that.

The Buffalo Bills rolled over nearly $4 million in salary cap space from 2020, so their projected spending cap will be at least $184 million in 2021. They currently have around $185 in Top-51 salary cap commitments plus dead cap money in 2021.

I dont follow the cap in detail. But I am wondering. Beane purged the roster a two years ago in order to have a hihg dead cap hit, but be in well shape for the future. And two years later we are at the cap without any deals. And with our Qb on a cheap deal. I understand that the cap is lower than expected one year ago, due to COVID. But why are other better in shape...

They have paid out some deals.  They paid Dawkins and White for starters.  They took on Diggs contract as well and it isn't small.  They also can very easily clear 25M by letting some of their recent FA signings go (Jefferson, Addison, Butler).  Compared to the league, they are in relatively good shape.
