Buffalo Bills are just the second team in NFL history with 20 first downs in every game

Bills tie another NFL record

Be careful, if you blink you may miss the Buffalo Bills setting a new franchise record or tying a league record. It seems almost every week, either Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs or the team as a whole set new standards for the league.

After the conclusion of the final regular-season game against the Miami Dolphins, the Buffalo Bills tied a league record and became just the second team in NFL history to record at least 20 first downs in every regular-season game this year. The only other team to do this was the 2012 New England Patriots who finished 12-4 and went on to lose to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship.

Most of the success on offense this year can be attributed to the play of Josh Allen, but the weapons around him allow Allen and the Bills to seemingly move the ball and score at will. Cole Beasley set career highs in receptions (82), receiving yards (967) as well as first downs (53) and was Allen’s favorite target in the slot.

The impact of Stefon Diggs doesn’t have to be explained to understand, but his 73 first downs this season led the team. Diggs also led not only the Bills, but the entire NFL in receptions (127) as well as receiving yards (1,535).

Buffalo finished the season with 397 total first downs, which was 37 first downs short of the NFL record set by the 1998 Detroit Lions. The Bills’ third-down conversions sat at 48.47 percent, which was fourth in the NFL.
