Carl Reiner was awesome.

M<y favorite scene from the Jerk.  His father shows him the difference between shit and shine-ola and he walks through the shit immediately afterward.

The Dick Van Dyke show was the template for smart comedies; followed by the Mary Tyler Moore show and Barney Miller.  From those you can see the roots for Taxi, Cheers, and Seinfeld.

And as a further testament to the genius of Carl Reiner:  I'm not a big fan of Dick Van Dyke, the actor.  His brother Jerry?  Awesome.  He's got the same appeal as Tim Conway.

I would have loved being a writer on Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows. Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Mel Tolkin. Wow

I would have loved being a young apprentice/writer to them.  Not in direct competition.  The cool thing?  Unlike Jerry Lewis, Milton Berle and Henny Youngman (all legends and awesome) - the Sid Caesar crew's humor doesn't date.  Like old Black Sabbath.
