We take a look back at the plays that tell the story of the 2019 season

The 2019 season is behind us, but the stories live on. Every week brought a different narrative and we look back on the season to tell those stories through the plays that defined the game. Sit back and get ready for the tale of the Wild Card Round:

Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans

The Buffalo Bills made the playoffs for the second time in three seasons and fans were riding high. A 16-0 lead at halftime had many tasting victory. Then Houston scored 19 unanswered points and made the Bills claw for a field goal to send the game to overtime. Squandered opportunities and a hell of a Texans resurgence left Buffalo fans with a bitter end to the season.

John Brown to Josh Allen touchdown (Q1, 11:51)

The Buffalo Bills weren’t holding back. After marching right down the field they caught the Texans napping on a trick play that saw John Brown throw his second touchdown of the season. This one was to Josh Allen who showed the determination that was charactaristic of the Bills all season.

Jerry Hughes sack (Q1, 10:02)

Keeping a playoff team to 22 points with an overtime period to boot is no small task. Keeping them off the scoreboard for the entire first half was something special. The constant pressure from the Bills’ defense was a major reason. Seven sacks and 12 hits is a lot of abuse for a quarterback to take. Jerry Hughes came prepared for the day earning three of those sacks and four hits.

The safety that wasn’t (Q3, 15:00)

The game was not without some controversy. Some of you are still likely mad at me for proving that Cody Ford’s costly overtime penalty was the right call. The refs and game were far from flawless though as this play should have led to two more points and a possession for the Bills. While most games have some bad calls, they become glaring when they arguably cost your team a playoff win.

Hauschka field goal (Q4, 0:10)

The Buffalo Bills moved the ball pretty well all day with over 400 yards of total offense. Five scoring drives is usually a good day at the office as well. However four of these were Stephen Hauschka field goals, including this one to send the game to overtime. The inability to convert these to touchdowns fueled a day of “so close” regret.

Missed sack (OT, 4:16)

The Texans never quit, to their credit. Whenever the Bills defense showed a crack in the second half or overtime, Houston found it. A tremendous effort from the Texans and several missed Buffalo opportunities all converge in one play that shut the door on the Bills’ season.

WAIT! There’s one more question for this one. After this one is in the books we’ll begin our bracket to crown a play to define the season. For a cleaner bracket of 16 plays we’ll need to drop a game. The two obvious choices are this game to make it a regular season bracket, or the Week 17 Jets game where the Bills weren’t exactly “trying.” To absolve myself of responsibility I’m making you decide.
