2019 Worst Bang for the Dollar Bills: K Stephen Hauschka

He was the highest-compensated kicker in the NFL in 2019.

Every team overpays for free agents. It’s the nature of the business that you can’t always predict future results, and even if you do, you sometimes end up overpaying for them. The Buffalo Bills are no exception and during the 2019 season they had a group of underwhelming players.

Number ten on our countdown is kicker Stephen Hauschka . Hauschka was the only kicker on the Bills’ roster during the 2019 season, though they did try to claim former Bills kicker Chase McLaughlin at one point during the year only to see him end up on the Indianapolis Colts. He made 78.6% of his field goals (21st in the NFL) for the second year in a row and 30 of his 32 extra point attempts (18th in the NFL, 0.3% ahead of McLaughlin). He was 1-of-5 from beyond 50 yards. Every other kicker who attempted five kicks of that length made at least two.

Hauschka had the highest salary cap number of any kicker in the NFL but clearly did not live up to his contract. At more than $5 million, he beat the next player on the list by more than $200,000. Former Bills kicker Dustin Hopkins was 10th at just over $3.2 million and McLaughlin was 35th at just $116,470. (McLaughlin made the minimum salary and was only on a roster for 11 games.)

The Bills drafted kicker Tyler Bass in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Hauschka is set to count $3.05 million against the cap in 2020, with Bass counting at a shade over $656k. The veteran is officially on notice.

Tyler Bass should be able to beat out Stephen Hauschka for field goal kicker and kick offs.

Joe Marino mentioned on his podcast that McDermott didn't trust Hauschka to make a 49 yard FG in a dome in the playoff game, that is why there is a Kicker competition and Beane drafted Bass.

L*t is a loser

My adapt a Bill is Brandon Beane.
