Buffalo’s long snapper is the specialist whose job appears to be safest

Of all the unsung heroes on the Buffalo Bills’ roster, the long snapper probably ranks as the player whose job is discussed the least. If all goes well, nobody ever mentions him. The only time his name comes up are in offseason articles designed to pass the long months without football or if he fires one way over the punter’s head during a game.

In today’s edition of “90 players in 90 days,” we’ll discuss the long snapper whose consistency has been a stabilizing force on Buffalo’s special teams.

Name: Reid Ferguson
Number: 69
Position: LS
Height/Weight: 6’2”, 235 lbs.
Age: 26 (27 on 3/24/2021)
Experience/Draft: 4; signed as UDFA following 2016 NFL Draft
College: LSU
Acquired: Signed as UDFA 5/2/16

Financial situation (per Spotrac): Ferguson signed a three-year contract extension last year, and he enters the second year of it in 2020. The total value of the contract is $2.745 million, and $445,000 is guaranteed. For 2020, Ferguson carries a cap hit of $1.06 million.

2019 Recap: Ferguson participated in all 16 games for the third consecutive season. He made one special teams tackle.

Positional outlook: Ferguson is the only long snapper on the Bills’ roster, so unless something changes, he’ll be the team’s long snapper in 2020 once again.

2020 Offseason: Ferguson was singled out by head coach Sean McDermott as a player who has “stepped up” in terms of leadership this offseason.

2020 Season outlook: There’s not much to say here, as Ferguson is as strong a lock for the final roster as some higher-profile players like Josh Allen and Devin Singletary. Without a backup or any competition, it’s clear that the coaching staff trusts Ferguson to handle one of the most important, while also one of the least glamorous, jobs on a football field. Ferguson is a great teammate, an upstanding citizen in the community, and someone on whom the team can rely day in and day out. He’ll be back in 2020 and beyond.

He is one of only two survivors from the Wrecks Ryan era.

Jerry Hughes is the other, but he was acquired during the Doug Morron era.
