Free agent forward recently wrapped up collegiate career

The Buffalo Sabres have signed free-agent forward Dawson DiPietro to a one-year, entry-level contract, the team announced Monday.

DiPietro, a 24-year-old from Medina, Ohio, joins the Sabres organization after a few seasons at Western Michigan University.

The 5’11”, 185-pound forward previously played in the NAHL with the Topeka Roadrunners, Coulee Region Chill, Austin Bruins and Janesville Jets. He appeared in one game with Western Michigan in the 2016-17 season, making his debut in a tie against Bowling Green.

In his first full collegiate season, DiPietro recorded 35 points, including 22 assists, in 36 games with the Broncos. He was named Rob Hodge Co-Most Valuable Player and also led the team in scoring, winning a number of other accolades. He followed up that season with 23 points in his junior season, and 29 in his senior season.

Buffalo Sabres’ general manager Jason Botterill noted his speed, high energy and “up-tempo style” as key assets to his game in a statement released by the team.

DiPietro attended Sabres’ development camp last summer and also played with Sabres prospect Mattias Samuelsson at Western Michigan.
