Bills block Giants from interviewing Brian Daboll

NFL: Cincinnati Bengals at Buffalo BillsRich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Hiring Daboll as OC was a priority for new Giants head coach Joe Judge

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll continues to be a commodity among teams searching for coaching help this offseason, but after he was unsuccessful in his efforts to land the Cleveland Browns’ head coaching job, the Bills denied the New York Giants the chance to interview Daboll for their offensive coordinator position.

In a report published by Ralph Vacchiano on SNY.TV, Vacchiano outlines why Daboll, who just completed his second season as OC for the Bills, drew interest from the Giants.

New Giants’ head coach Joe Judge had previously worked with Daboll on Bill Belichick’s coaching staff with the New England Patriots from 2013-16, when Judge was a special teams assistant/special teams coordinator, and Daboll was an offensive assistant and tight ends coach. So the two had familiarity with each other.

But a move from Buffalo to the Giants could have been considered a lateral career transition for Daboll. After all, in his two seasons in Western New York, Daboll has been able to oversee the development of quarterback Josh Allen, and is coming off a season where the Bills went 10-6 and earned a Wild Card berth as the No. 5 seed in the AFC, the team’s second playoff appearance in three years.

In Daboll’s second season with the Bills, the team ranked 23rd in the NFL in points scored (314), 24th in total yards gained (5,283), eighth in total rushing yards (2,054), and 11th in fewest turnovers (19).

Allen made strides, seeing improvement in every meaningful statistic: total touchdowns (29 this year compared to 18 last year), passing touchdowns (20 this year, 10 last year), interceptions (nine this year, 12 last year), completion percentage (58.8% this year, 52.4% last year), and wins (5-6 his rookie season, 10-6 in 2019).

Daboll’s coaching resume includes serving as offensive coordinator for four NFL teams: the Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Miami Dolphins, and Cleveland Browns.

With Daboll out of the picture, the Giants are rumored to be interested in having former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett take over as offensive coordinator.
