Bills add WR Ray-Ray McCloud to practice squad

The Buffalo Bills have signed wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud to their practice squad, the team announced Thursday morning.

To make room on the practice squad, the Bills released wide receiver Jordan Veasy.

The move serves as a homecoming for McCloud, who was drafted by the Bills in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The former Clemson playmaker was underwhelming in his rookie campaign, catching just five passes for 36 yards in 10 appearances.

He showed up to his second training camp with a renewed sense of confidence, impressing Buffalo’s coaching staff with flashes of ability and a maturity he lacked in his rookie season. The sophomore shined in the 2019 preseason, catching nine passes for 97 yards. Five of his receptions came in the Bills’ preseason finale.

Despite a strong offseason, McCloud failed to crack Buffalo’s 53-man roster and was released as part of the team’s final cut down. The Bills had hoped to add him to their 10-man practice squad, but that opportunity never arose. McCloud was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers.

McCloud was used as a kick and punt returner in Carolina, tallying 18 total returns throughout his short stint with the team. Fumble issues haunted McCloud in Carolina, as he fumbled the ball on three of his touches. The Panthers waived McCloud on Oct. 15.

Now back with the team that initially saw something in him, McCloud has the opportunity to resurrect his promising career. Though consistency has been an issue of McCloud’s, his talent is undeniable. Should he reach his ceiling, he could be a reliable offensive playmaker.

Buffalo once again has the opportunity to turn McCloud into this type of player.

I saw his name on the NFL Transaction list when he was released and wondered if the Bills might look at him again.

Practice squad is a good spot for him.   He is still a long shot to make an impact in the NFL, but good luck to him.
