Lol are we shocked by this? Apparently Morse and Beasley also underwent core muscle surgery a couple weeks ago and Gore is having foot and ankle issues. This team is breaking down before stepping foot on a real football field.

Same foot he broke last year. How in the hell do you break your foot in non contact drills?? This guy is toast.

lol I'm not even sure how I would compare it to JP Losman in the non contact drills.....but SEANDELEVEN is likely going to have an er*ction, for being as right as he is year after year. I was literally going to post a joke today in the ping pong thread about our QB not having to worry about having a broken bone in a non contact drill like JP...and I'm glad I didnt now because I dont want to be blamed for jinxing anything!

Seriously, this is the team of the Wet Rubber Mat.

that is a tough break for Kroft (pun intended). Thank goodness we have like 6-7 TEs on the team right now.

Seriously, he really dropped the ball without the BREAKING or some variation on this one. What is more perfect a thread for it? :)

Ryan Talbot's cousin(I think?!?) has an article on why the Bills should hit up this guy:

The Bills did free up a roster spot - so maybe the vikings TE is in play.

I wonder if it's similar to Sammy Watkins broken foot?

Was he injured on the newly installed turf?

Typical Buffalo Bills......have the lowest rated turf in the NFL, replace it with the same crappy turf and have an injury on the first day.

I have been following the Rudolph news closely. He sure would fill the TE need for the Pats.

Worse than Fedex Field?

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2017/turf-type-and-nfl-injuries-part-ii

"Looking more closely, as expected, visitors to the only field with A-Turf -- New Era Field in Buffalo -- suffer a high overall injury rate. At 23.0, they are effectively tied for the worst overall rate. This would translate to roughly seven or eight more injuries over the course of a full home slate for a team playing in Buffalo instead of a league-average stadium like New Orleans."

29. Buffalo Bills: Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, N.Y.

"The only field using the A-Turf Titan infill artificial system hasn’t gotten a good rap around the league. It is tough to tell if the cold weather in Buffalo has put a difficult spin on the Ralph Wilson Stadium turf or if this style of artificial turf just doesn’t have the same comfort level as the rest of the league."

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2017/turf-type-and-nfl-injuries-part-i

"The overall injury rates for grass and artificial turf are 16.9 and 17.2 per 1,000 AEs, respectively -- a modest difference that's attributable to chance. When we stratify by artificial turf type, though, we see a bigger range of differences. Matrix Turf has the best overall injury rate (14.2 per 1,000 AEs), while A-Turf's Titan 50 product brings up the rear at 18.8. Astroplay is also low (15.3) while FieldTurf -- the most common artificial turf in the NFL, used in five stadiums -- was elevated at 18.0. All the other turf types have rates within 0.8 of natural grass surfaces.

Obviously terrible news as Kroft was penciled in as the starting TE for the regular season. If the 3 to 4 month recovery period that is being reported is accurate, it is very likely that Kroft will start the season on the PUP list and not be rushed back into the line up until he is fully healthy.

This is also a great opportunity for the younger TE's to step up and earn the starting TE role. Tommy Sweeney, Jason Croom, and Dawson Knox will all be in the mix but I believe Knox will win the starting job and that he has the highest upside being a former QB he knows what Allen looks for when reading defefenses.

I wish I could give you more thanks on this post, youre on fire today. This offseason had numerous articles about this brand-new, state of the art training complex....supposedly in the top 2 or so in the league. Things that get other players to WANT to come play for the Bills. Why ruin all of that, something that took a lot of work and creative thought, with something that doesn't require anything of the sort to optimize?!?

Good to see Sean didnt miss this thread, I was waiting for his reaction more than anyone's. It almost feels like The Curse never ended, and just faded.....possibly worthy of it's own thread.

I believe Bills feel this turf works best in WNY climate. UB also uses it.

It never really gets too cold in Dallas and that field is never subject to rain or snow with the roof, so hard to compare.

That's about the only thing that makes sense. Until I see otherwise, Terry and Kim look like they went Bills to the wall to come up with something they could be proud of and market to incoming players.

Tyler Kroft broke the same foot he broke last year. I don't know if it was the new turf that caused the injury, or a degenerate foot issue.

The only good thing about this injury is that it happened early enough that the young TE's can receive valuable reps and get coached up and developed as a replacement for Kroft.

Kroft will play this year if his foot heals faster than expected he may return the last game of preseason. But it's more realistic to assume he will be placed on the PUP(physically unable to perform) list so that the medical staff is very conservative with his recovery and lets him fully heal before starting the rehab process. If Buffalo carries 4 TE on the 53 man roster, Lee Smith will be the blocking specialist for both the passing and running game and Dawson Knox, Jason Croom and Tommy Sweeney will make the roster.

When Kroft is ready to come back, by game 2 or 3 of the regular season, Sweeney will most likely be released and then signed to the practice squad.

You really need to stop saying “coached up”.

This isn’t pee-wee football.

It’s the NFL.

The more talented player wins 95% of the time and assistant coaches are recycled like garbage.

“Coached up” is a joke.

Huh?

If he’s put on PUP, the earliest he can come back is week 7.

Not 2 or 3.

Not 2 or 3.

Dawson Knox was a QB in high school, he switched to a TE at Ole Miss. This means he has been playing TE for 3 years.

All players can be coached up and developed. Athletism matters, but in the NFL everyone is big and fast. Technique matters, the person with the best technique beats the athlete playing with bad technique. Ideally, you will have players with good technique and good athletism.

Just look at the OL at New England, they don't always have the best talent but because of the coaching of Dante Scarnecchia, they are consistently good. Dante Scarnecchia is one of the best OL coaches in the NFL and is great at developing and coaching up OL, regardless of the talent of athletism they have.

My bad on the PUP, I thought the player come back sooner than 6 weeks. That being said, there is no point of having Tyler Kroft on the roster if he not ready to play and rehabbing from a broken foot, the same foot he broke last year. If it takes putting him on the IR or PUP list and waiting six weeks to come back so be it.

Being we're talking TE's, why is Knox the last unsigned draftee/free agent, about 2 weeks after everyone else? I read there is slightly more wiggle room for 3rd rounders, but am curious if we should set an over/under on how long Beane takes to close him?

With whom Beane picked up on the waiver wire, he apparently looks confident with working with what we've got instead of getting someone named, like the fellow on the the Vikings. (Unless he really is considering a trade, and today's body was just to take up space until then so he isn't rushed).

When was the last great Bills hold out?
