Jerry Hughes extended

Recommended Posts

BREAKING: This is great news!

not the stupid bickering that has gone on forever in this thread, I MEAN THE HUGHES EXTENSION

how awesome. now they dont have to worry about RDE for three more seasons. they didnt lock him in long term bc he might show signs of hitting the wall by the third season. AND they didnt pay him huge money either

its good money but nowhere near what he would have got as a FA next season, which makes it obvious he really wanted to stay here - which is great!

what a fkn great off-season so far. and just think, there may be more to come if the beaner swings a deal. not to mention mcbean picking up some more castoffs and turning them into real contributors if not starters, which they have been good at

BREA-FKG-KING great news

I agree, Meat. It was nice to get some good news today, even if other folks tried to bring us down otherwise.

The deal seems reasonable, although I am not certain that we're set at his position for 3 years, as it can be tough to predict some of these guy's level of play. Overall, indeed great news. Glad to see Beane is still at work, because with this rash of injuries he may need to be.

Great extension, Jerry Hughes is the best pass rusher on the team. Former GM Doug Whaley had some bad draft picks, but by far his best move was trading Kelvin Sheppard for Jerry Hughes. Hughes didn't play his potential in Indianapolis but became one of the NFL better edge rushers in Buffalo.

You heard it here first, my bold prediction is that Eli Harold will beat out Eddie Yarborough on the depth chart and be Hughes back up.

Over the next few year I expect Hughes to take on more of a pass rush specialist role rather than an every down lineman.

This should keep him fresh and help his stats

hughes isnt near that point

any aging player that is showing signs of slowing down is going to get fewer plays, either as part of a rotation or a specialty role. alexander is a good example, hes the starter but they rotate guys in for him a lot bc hes pretty long in the tooth. hes still good but he simply cant play as many downs as he used to

but i dont think jerry hughes is in any jeopardy of losing plays this coming season. hes in his prime right now, he should be able to play almost every down. if he can stay healthy, he might still be used just as heavily next year, too

he will lose plays eventually as you describe, but he should still be in his prime the next couple seasons. thats why its so cool they got him at such a reasonable price AND only for two more years. very team friendly contract.

shows how much he wanted to stay here, which is cool

I'm really rooting for this to be correct. I'm hoping the conjecture that Ed Oliver and other healthy defenders will make Jerry see less double teams and actually help increase the Bills woeful sack totals. If so, the deal might end up looking even better than it does now.

I’m also glad that Hughes is the only player left from that expensive defensive line. Him and Kyle Williams proved to be only two real BILLS on that line aside from Dareus and Mario, who both basically just showed up to get paid at the end of the day.

Money changes some people, it doesn't change people with character. Kyle Wiliams and Jerry Hughes wanted to earn there pay cheques, Mario Williams and Marcel Dareus thought they made it once they got their big paydays.

I agree with that to an extent, but being I haven't really followed Dareus after he left the Bills, wasn't his new coach able to get more out of him and his captain's hat?

You have to pick your poison as an offensive coordinator when you are game planning to shut down a defense. Do you want to double team Ed Oliver or Jerry Hughes? Either way, you lose because Hughes and Oliver will dominate one on one blocks.

I believe Trent Murphy will bounce back after a mediocre season last year and take advantage of one on one blocks as well, and get some qb pressures, qb hits and sacks as the edge rusher opposite of Hughes. McDermott also likes to use Lorenzo Alexander as a pass rush specialist on obvious passing downs, so Buffalo should be ok this year at edge rusher. But I expect Buffalo not to re-sign Shaq Lawson after the season and draft an edge rusher or sign an edge rusher in free agency to replace him.

I like the work ethic and hustle of Harrison Philips but he showed very little as an interior pass rusher so I'm hoping he will develop some pass rush moves to work off of his bull rush.

He is currently a good run defender and a good space eater, but he is not the interior pass rusher he once was. The number of QB hits, TFL's and sacks are down from earlier in his career. IMO if he lost 20 to 25 lbs he would be a more dominant player. At the NFL Combine he weighed in at 319 lbs, he is currently playing at 330 ish lbs.

I have a tasty morsel some of you might enjoy, and a little challenge to see how many of you know off the top of their heads. In 2019, what Bills are the bigger cap hits than Jerry Hughes?

Some other interesting facts is that Jerry is the 20th most highly paid DE in the NFL, and #128 overall in the NFL, which is nothing to sneeze at.

The Buffalo Bills didn't want to let Jerry Hughes get away, so they signed him on Tuesday to a two-year contract extension worth $23 million, including $19.5 million in guaranteed money and an average annual salary of $11.5 million, according to Spotrac.

In 2019, Hughes will carry a cap hit of $10.4 million, which ranks third highest on the team behind defensive tackle Star Lotulelei ($11.5 million) and center Mitch Morse ($10.9 million).

I like Star Lotulelei the person and player but Beane overpaid him in order to get his veteran leadership and thankless play as a 2 gapping 1 technique DT. His presence and effort as a space eating DT make life easier for his fellow teammates as he frequently takes on double teams. The run defense greatly improved by his presence and play last year compared to the 2017 season when Buffalo's run defense was terrible. The dead cap hit makes it stupid to cut or trade him this season or next season, but unless he takes a pay cut after the 2020 season he can be cut or traded with a 2021 Cap Savings of $8,250,000. By 2021 Harrison Phillips should be ready to start as the 1 technique DT.

Having a veteran Center is vitally important for a young QB to succeed. An uper tier Center like Mitch Morse can take care of the OL audible at the line of scrimmage to adjust the pass protection to blitz and/or stunts by the defense. Mitch Morse is worth every penny Beane spent on him. Fun fact Beane signed Eric Woods to a contract extension before Woods was forced to retire due to a degenerative neck issue.

for the love of Christ people, MCCOY SUCKS!!!!! hasnt been good in 5 years. He will have you comparing him to Dareus in no time. Waste of space that does absolutely nothing for weeks at a time.

Seriously. Why else would the Bucs just cut him. Nobody wanted to trade for him. I'll pass.

Need to make a deal for Clowney. The longer it takes the asking price will go down. They have til July 15th to work out a long term deal. He is reportedly looking for close to 15 a year which isn’t much more than we are paying Hughes.

I want a highlight reel of Jerry Hughes getting held whilst the referees fail to call it; concentrate on games with Ed Hochuli refereeing.

Wait, that's pretty much every passing play.

Mario #2. No thanks.

There's a reason teams are willing to part with guys like McCoy and Clowney.
